Monitoring Educational Equity – Book

Disparities in educational attainment among population groups have characterized the United States throughout its history. Education is sometimes characterized as the “great equalizer,” but to date, the country has not found ways to successfully address the adverse effects of socioeconomic circumstances, prejudice, and discrimination that suppress performance for some groups.

This year the program will have an emphasis on Computational Physics in addition to the staple lectures and tours. Because of the additional component we will extend the program by one day and we will end on Saturday January 11. Selected URM students will participate in this one week program and will have their travel and housing completely funded. See attached for the full announcement and application.

We are also in the middle or updating our application system, because of this we will be using paper applications. We are asking for your help in this endeavor for this year and will need your help in the following:

1.Distribute the attached application to your selected students

2.Your students can fill the application and print it when complete

3.Collect completed applications

4.Send us the completed application packet by mail (Postmarked by November 1st)

The information provided in the applications is business sensitive information for selection/planning purposes and in support of the onboarding activities of the new awardees. Once the applications are collected, please limit the distribution to those with a need-to-know, and handle Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in compliance with your institution’s policies and procedures.

If your application is successful and you accept our offer, you will become an Einstein, Hubble or Sagan fellow depending on the area of your research. We are continuing the legacy of those three earlier programs in this way, and through joint management of the program by STScI, in collaboration with the Chandra X-ray Center and the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute.

The NHFP is open to applicants of any nationality who have earned (or will have earned) their doctoral degree on or after January 1, 2017 in astronomy, physics or related disciplines. The duration of the Fellowship is up to three years: an initial one-year appointment, and two annual renewals contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of NASA funds. Eligibility may extend to those who received their PhD as early as January 1, 2016, if professional work was necessarily delayed by personal or family considerations. Extended eligibility must be justified in an email to nhfp at stsci.edu at least 2 weeks in advance of the application deadline.

We anticipate offering up to 24 NHFP Fellowships this year. The Fellowships are tenable at a U.S. host institution of the fellow's choice, subject to a maximum of two new fellows per host
institution per year, and no more than five fellows at any single host institution, except for short periods of overlap. The Announcement of Opportunity, which includes detailed program policies and application

Joint Faculty and Associate Research Scientist Position in Theoretical Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
Open Date: September 25, 2019

Deadline: November 15, 2019

Description:
The Department of Physics at New York University (NYU), jointly with the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute, invites applications for a joint position<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__as.nyu.edu_physics_information_jobs.html&d=DwMFAw&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=45ucIEKyq0pHGO-wQTsdbRghpM6p6HwwJJKBjgpK5ZU&m=9kmXs3FsmbKYueyQp0F9zPPPQjHJBgUHocZMQnF34ns&s=ckl43Qe3145hgf9QGfVbJ3TUv9iYwhMAbM5cHhq9Vr8&e=>. We seek candidates working on fundamental questions at the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology using computational methods and/or modern data science approaches. The Center for Computational Astrophysics' mission is to create new computational frameworks that allow scientists to analyze big astronomical datasets and to understand complex, multi-scale physics in astrophysical systems ranging in scales from planets to cosmology. The successful candidate will join the Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics in the NYU Physics Department. The CCPP is a group of faculty, students and research scientists working on fundamental questions at the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology.

The position is a 50-50 joint appointment between NYU and CCA, with the appointee spending half of her or his effort in each place. At NYU the opening is at the tenure track Assistant Professor level and, at CCA, it is at the Associate Research Scientist level. The position is based at the Simons Foundation and NYU offices in New York City. It is expected that, subject to satisfactory progress in research, the Associate Research Scientist Appointment at CCA will continue for the duration of the NYU untenured faculty appointment (approximately and/or up to six years). The holder of this joint appointment will be considered for promotion to a full time NYU tenured professorship according to NYU's standard policies and procedures.

A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field is required. The responsibilities for this joint position include but are not limited to: establishing a leading research program with a significant computational component; teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels at NYU; contributing to the scientific activities at the Flatiron Institute by assisting with the organization of CCA-related conferences, workshops group seminars and summer programs, and to supervising research conducted by Flatiron Research Fellows and summer interns.

Review of applications will begin on or about November 15, 2019.
