Hello everyone,

Just a reminder that Dr. Matt Caplan is visiting our department today. If you see him, please make him feel welcome.

If at all possible, please join us for a special colloquium at 4:10 in Science 123 (notice different room - the time difference is minimal). Coffee and cookies will be available beforehand.

Students: After the colloquium, there will be a time for our students (graduates and undergraduates) to meet and chat with Dr. Caplan. Students, this is your chance to meet with our candidate and to pick his brain about issues important to you, whether it be his approach to teaching, questions about his research, etc.

Faculty: at the moment I have Drs. Li and Park attending lunch (12pm-1pm) and Drs. Lock, Newton and myself attending dinner. Please let me know if you’d like to accrete on to either group.

OFF-LIMIT QUESTIONS: There are questions that are absolutely off-limits for our candidate visits. If the candidate proffers the information unprompted, that is okay, but you must NOT pursue that line of discussion. A list of questions not to ask is here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.thehrspecialist.com_3474_25-2Doff-2Dlimits-2Dinterview-2Dquestions&d=DwIGaQ&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=0FY-iIjI4SqeYwGC2b_NjfnnP9-oBQufaoX9RLyQuLE&m=kC1oWm3dWBU6j2J4YMLfhRN2F_pHL5HAC3B92Kb01KY&s=LdnbyHcn-DJLI83mm_zzR2Blj_rxcf9_mcDs3SKW03w&e=
Basically, don’t ask about family, religion, politics, health history, mental health, racial background, age, or sexual orientation. ASKING QUESTIONS ALONG THESE LINES, WHETHER INTENTIONAL OR NOT, LEAVE US OPEN TO POTENTIAL LAWSUITS. If you don’t know what else to talk about, talk about physics and astrophysics.

Cheers,
Dr. Williams
