[phas-faculty_staff_others] Passing of Professor Emeritus Chopra

Good afternoon everyone,

The Department of Physics & Astronomy was saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Emeritus Dev R. Chopra on Thursday, July 24 in Florida.

Dr. Chopra was a physics professor for 33 years and served as department head.  He was the university's first faculty member to be named a Regents Professor.  During his career, he published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several books.  He mentored more than 30 master's students and received $1.5 million in external research grants.  In 2008, Dr. Chopra was named a Professor Emeritus by President Dan Jones.

The university flag is flying at half-staff today in honor and memory of Dr. Chopra.

The department is saddened by his loss and proud to continue to honor his contributions and his legacy.
