Dear Carlos,
After months of advocacy, extensive negotiations, and a record-breaking government shutdown, Congress has at last passed fiscal year 2026 budget appropriations for the agencies covered by the Commerce, Justice, Science and Energy and Water subcommittees. The appropriations bills include DOE, NASA, NIST, and NSF.
Thanks to the efforts of volunteers like you from across the country, the final budget is a rejection of the massive cuts proposed last May by the President.
Thank Your Elected Officials<https://info.aps.org/e/640833/lp-wo01sss5/2w1ynj/1783137948/h/iV8hKk6ODkPEXlInnPBRSquILQZk5vL_TzQybV3dGb4>
In an extremely difficult budget landscape, congressional leaders from both parties have backed science funding. The president proposed cutting NSF by more than 50% and NASA by 47%; the final numbers amount to a cut of less than 4% and 1% respectively. In our current times, this is a remarkable win and a credit to your efforts last year. For DOE Office of Science, NASA Science, NIST, and NSF, APS member advocacy helped restore approximately $10 billion in proposed cuts.
Now, it’s important we show Congress we appreciate their support.
Science funding for 2027 is likely to be another challenging battle, so we must strengthen our alliances and champions. 479 members of Congress voted for FY 2026 science funding and only 43 members voted against the funding package. Science agencies were bundled in with other funding, so members who voted against the package may have objected to other pieces of the legislation. That’s why we’re focusing on the future in our messages to these members, asking them to support robust science funding in 2027.
Take Action<https://info.aps.org/e/640833/lp-wo01sss5/2w1ynj/1783137948/h/iV8hKk6ODkPEXlInnPBRSquILQZk5vL_TzQybV3dGb4>
Write Congress today. We’ve prewritten a letter you can send in less than a minute, but unique and personalized messages can have even greater impact. Please take five minutes to add your perspective. Help us continue to defend science in the years ahead.
Thank you for being a voice for physics.
