Hello everyone,
If you didn't read the below email from John Harris, note that there will be a fire drill in the Science Building on Friday at 2:30pm. You are required to evacuate the building during this drill. Leave by the nearest safe exit in an expeditious but orderly fashion. Please then assemble in the Great Lawn (the grassy area north of the building between us and the BA building) and remain until given the "all clear".
I know this is annoying and disruptive, but, as with any emergency drill, the goal is to make it absolutely clear what to do in case of a true emergency. Do not ignore the alarm, and do not simply leave and not proceed to the assembly area (if there were a real emergency, we knew you were in the building, and you did not show up at the Rally Point, first responders would be risking their lives trying to find you while you wandered off to Starbucks). Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Dr. Williams

Subject: Fire Drills - Week of 3/24/2025
Hello Lions!
We will be conducting fire drills this week at the buildings and approximate times listed below. The drills are expected to last approximately 30 minutes each. The fire alarm system will be activated to initiate the drills.
* Performing Arts Center: Friday 3/28/2025 at 2PM.
* McFarland Science Building: Friday 3/28/2025 at 2:30PM.
* Art Building: Friday 3/28/2025 at 3PM.
Please note that the activation of the fire alarm system will NOT activate the fire sprinkler system.
Your cooperation is mandatory to become familiar with the sound of the fire alarm system and evacuation routes. Anytime the alarm sounds, occupants must exit the building.
If you are confirmed to have an emotional/support animal, you are responsible for the animal during the fire drill.
Please treat all fire alarms as real. Whenever the fire alarm sounds occupants should do the following:
1. Grab keys, phone, and University ID card;
2. Grab a jacket (if during night and/or colder months);
3. Check the door or doorknob. If it is cool, open and proceed towards the closest emergency exit to assigned rally point, i.e., meeting location*. If it is hot, do not open it, place a towel under the door if smoke is either seen or smelled, call 911 and inform them of your location.
4. Leave door closed and walk to exit. If smoke is encountered, stay low for air.
5. Do not use an elevator.
6. Do not re-enter the building under any circumstance until cleared by UPD, EHS, or Facilities & Construction Staff member.
Prepare ahead of time by becoming familiar with the location of egress paths, exits, fire extinguishers, and rally points.
*Please consult the Lion Safe App for Rally points for each building. After opening the Lion Safe App, click the Emergency Plans tile, and then click the Rally Points-Fire Evacuation tile. This will bring up a campus map with pins identifying the rally point for each building. Select the pin for the building that you are in.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Thanks,
John Harris, CEFP, CFI
