FYI; please respond to the Texas Section of the APS if you have any comments. From my understanding, APS-Dallas is out of consideration.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Kenichi Hatakeyama from Baylor University and I am currently the Chair of the Texas Section of the American Physical Society (TSAPS). I am reaching out to you, because you are listed as a chair/head/program coordinator of physics (or related) department in Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Texas in our record.

As you may have noticed already, we recently sent out solicitations of inputs about the potential name change of TSAPS. More details on this topic can be found below, but in summary there has been a concern in the current executive committee that the current name doesn't acknowledge our colleagues in Oklahoma and Arkansas adequately. We already received a good number of inputs from the section members (thank you!); however, more are welcome.

The message below asked for inputs by today, but inputs over the next few days will be still quite welcome. If you can forward the message below to your department members and encourage them to provide inputs (in case they haven’t), we would really appreciate it.

And, if you think you are receiving this message by mistake and/or I should be contacting somebody else in your department, would you mind letting me know so that I can update our record for future purposes?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Kenichi Hatakeyama, Chair of the Texas Section of the American Physical Society

Dear TSAPS members,

This is a friendly reminder of a call for your inputs to potential name change of TSAPS. Your inputs by January 17 (Friday), 2025 will be greatly appreciated. The original message is appended below for more information.
________________________________

I hope this message finds you well. In this message, we would like to follow up on one item which was discussed in the TSAPS open business meeting held on October 19 during the Fall 2024 Joint Meeting of the Texas Section of the APS, Texas Section of the AAPT & Zone 13 of the SPS, held at Southern Methodist University.

In this meeting, we discussed the potential name change of TSAPS. The slides used during the discussion can be found online<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__info.aps.org_e_640833_-2DTSAPS-2DPotentialNameChange-2Dpdf_2sgrcj_1400910084_h_zUttndE23cAD47uyk7Hep8-2DS1XrImNgr-5F3rNfXwRlbw&d=DwMGaQ&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=ClC0dKui16NsesUATLpQgnMUgkdQBfRjO_qQut95l7c&m=WEvMUVAUDjpUY0IOvqYqxkFdPH9EWUM56TG3gZQlewBtswfG38YDAADif2vYd8rC&s=SSV5QFwTCjkXTNbJGmYjQRpphg3x4aDupQt8gWB_wiQ&e=>. Our section's bylaw states: The membership of the Section shall consist primarily of members of the Society residing in Texas and contiguous states”, and TSAPS actually covers Oklahoma and Arkansas. However, some concern has been expressed that the current name doesn't acknowledge our colleagues in Oklahoma and Arkansas adequately. The TSAPS executive committee has been discussing the potential renaming of the section.

The suggested new names so far include:

  * Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma (TAO) Section
     * It unambiguously mentions all three states in the section, but the name is somewhat long.
  *   Southwest(ern) Section
     * This is a regional name similar to some other APS sections (southeastern, northwest). However, often southwest(en) includes New Mexico and Arizona which are not in TSAPS.
  *   Red River Section
     * The Red River touches Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas; however, this name may not be commonly known.
We are open to some other ideas too.

We would like to get feedback from section members (student, teacher, faculty) about renaming and the potential new section name. If you haven’t, when you have a chance, we would appreciate your input through this form<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__info.aps.org_e_640833_bSfpbxonupcwTHfj7_2sgrcm_1400910084_h_zUttndE23cAD47uyk7Hep8-2DS1XrImNgr-5F3rNfXwRlbw&d=DwMGaQ&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=ClC0dKui16NsesUATLpQgnMUgkdQBfRjO_qQut95l7c&m=WEvMUVAUDjpUY0IOvqYqxkFdPH9EWUM56TG3gZQlewBtswfG38YDAADif2vYd8rC&s=uACvpBYBlRrr5gxcYXsCTM9CL1tvI8IxwKH2PIRf62s&e=> by Friday, January 17, 2025. Depending on the outcome of this survey, the executive committee may bring the renaming proposal to the APS governance committee and APS council of representatives.

Thank you very much for your input in advance.

Kenichi Hatakeyama for the TSAPS Executive Committee
