Dr. Atinc:
Having not received a template Tuesday, I surveyed my departmental faculty with the following question Tuesday afternoon. Here are the results of that inquiry:
The majority (8 out of 9) would vote against a message from the Senate supporting the name change, if that request was made for East Texas A&M University. In their words, they would “vote for it to remain TAMUC.” Below is the message I sent, and the tally/verbatim messages of those who responded. Thank you for this extension to reflect the preference of the faculty in our actions.
For: 1
Against: 8
No “I like the current name and I am open if the name changes after discussion.”
Yes “East Texas A&M University”
No “Remain TAMUC!”
No “I would vote for it to remain TAMUC”
No “My vote to remain – Texas A&M University-Commerce”
No “I would vote to remain TAMUC as it follows the standard marketing for the rest of the system.”
No “My vote would be to remain TAMUC.”
No “Remain TAMUC has my vote!”
No “I would vote against sending a message representing faculty preference at this time.”
“Good Counseling Colleagues:
As our representative to the faculty senate, I have been asked to survey you on the following question. Please respond to me via email, before 2p Thursday. Thank you for prioritizing this, as I recognize it is a short turn around. Perhaps considering REPLY instead of REPLY ALL.
• If the University decides to revisit the naming of institution, would you prefer that the senate (on behalf of the faculty) indicate support of re-naming it East Texas A&M University, or indicate support of leaving it as Texas A&M University-Commerce?
The assumption at the moment is, it is one or the other. We would either be changed to East Texas A&M University, OR is would remain as is, TAMUC.
What is your preference? I will report the collective opinion of our department to our Senate Chair. Each department is asking this of their faculty.
Thank you. – Rusty”

Subject: Reminder! Faculty Senate Feedback Process
Dear Senators,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request your assistance in gathering faculty feedback regarding a potential name change for the university. While a formal vote is not necessary at this stage, I ask that each senator reach out to their department faculty to discuss this matter and collect their input.
Key stakeholders have already expressed support for the change, believing it will help us regain emotional and financial backing while reinforcing our heritage. The conversation around this has already begun, and it is important that we, as faculty, take part in shaping the outcome. This is a key opportunity for us to have a meaningful voice in the future of our institution.
It is perfectly fine if consensus cannot be reached within your department. Whatever the outcome of your discussions, that feedback will be reported as the voice of the Faculty Senate. Please provide the feedback from your department by Thursday at the end of the day.
Thank you for your time and effort in reaching out to your faculty and gathering their insights. I look forward to receiving your feedback.
Regards,
Yasemin
