Hello,
Attached is the workload policy on the CHSSA site.
The Department of Art is currently in the process of revisiting our workload policy. We will be meeting to discuss this later this month, and I will report back once an updated version is available.
Short version:
All, or most full-time faculty in the Department of Art (VisCom in Dallas and all art classes in Commerce), as well as non-tenure track faculty, exceed the current workload policy through studio classes, lecture courses or a combination of lecture and studio courses (depending on area of concentration and scheduling).
Details:
Currently, our three credit hour studio courses (Commerce Campus) are twice as long as standard lecture courses (we currently meet for about 5.75 contact hours each week for each, three-credit class) - so a typical 4/4 lecture course load plus research and service would equate to a 2/2 studio course load (plus research and service).
Historically, and also, currently, faculty exceed the CHSSA workload via course equivalent. Each full-time faculty member teaches a 3/3 or 3/2 - both well over the equivalent contact hours, in addition to individual graduate meetings, reviews, etc. Plus research and service. Due to the overage, graduate work (individual studio visits with students and reviews) straddles and/or falls into the service category, as it is unpaid teaching, unless a faculty member is running a graduate course beyond studio visits and reviews with grads.
Non-tenure track faculty (teaching only) teach a 4/4 (contact hours are double as they are studio courses - so well beyond a 5/5).
Again, we are in the process of revisiting our workload policy while simultaneously workshopping new course rotations. I appreciate the recommended examples provided yesterday, and will share these as we work on our policy.
Any questions, please let me know!
Thank you,
Josephine

Hello Senators,
Per our conversation yesterday, I am forwarding you Dr. Starnes’s findings on workload policy.

Subject: Faculty Workload Policy
Hi Zach,
I have finally read through the Faculty Workload Policies that I received. Of the 27 departments, 8 did not respond to my request for information over their policy.
The attachment summaries what I gleaned from the department heads responses and from reading the policy of those who did respond.
It looks like the majority of department’s have not constructed a policy to fit their own department. Most seem to simply resort to the general University or College policy.
Doctoral departments all seem to provide course reductions for dissertation mentor work (based on the number of students mentored).
A handful of departments (maybe 3-4 it seems), have somewhat explicit policy stating course reductions can be had for significant scholarly, administrative, or service work. After the course reduction, documentation must follow to demonstrate that the time was used productively.
The departments whose policy seems to be the best (most explicit in defining workload), based on those sent to me, seem to be History, Political Science, Physics and Nursing. I have attached those policies here.
Stephen
