Dear Colleague,

The University of Kansas is very pleased to host one of twelve APS-sponsored Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics in January 2018. The application site (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__apscuwip.ku.edu_&d=DwIGaQ&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=hjwEO_XYlnwAQWUGeaCrW47w4mK-Al28-BKyRvaivBs&m=EoLWEdUXgVyeqo8lgfG-hjwJxqCzoyDla-9lCDlGMcY&s=BWIWmXPvS4RuvBxDB7qTEkt_7XYmCahwTtygnicDBiw&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__apscuwip.ku.edu_&d=DwMFAg&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=oPHX933s0QxGh0LKaD80CQbTBmY6tYbw-FCePPPwFYM&m=fQk_UJyyKn1jn4UB03xg2EvBqpr3TkW1lygaQaB8hQc&s=49nOIhxI7T7gigEdsgRE_KASx74oIspb9iMmS9JRGjc&e=>) opens today, September 1, and closes on Friday, October 13, 2017. We ask you to please advertise the conference among your physics majors, encourage them to apply, and support their travel if they are accepted to the conference. We will provide local support for lodging and meals.

The APS CUWiP goal is to help undergraduate women continue in physics by providing them with the opportunity to experience a professional conference, information about graduate school and professions in physics, and access to other women in physics of all ages with whom they can share experiences, advice, and ideas. Conference activities are designed to benefit students at all undergraduate stages, including freshmen, empowering them to persist and succeed in science careers.

Our conference will start with a plenary talk by Dr. Julianne Pollard-Larkin of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on Friday evening, January 12, 2018. Saturday evening features a plenary talk by Prof. Angela Olinto of the University of Chicago. The conference will end Sunday afternoon, January 14. The keynote presentation, which will be webcast to all twelve regional conferences, will be given by Professor Patricia Burchat from Stanford University, who will speak about the breadth of opportunities for physicists in forefront areas of research, education, and leading roles in the private sector.

The program will include research talks by faculty and industry professionals, panel discussions about graduate school and careers in physics, presentations and discussions about women in physics, laboratory tours, student research presentations, and ample opportunities for interactions among attendees and with the speakers.

Lodging and meals will be provided for participants who are accepted to the conference. In the past we have been able to ensure that nearly all students had travel support either through their department or through the conference. Physics departments are strongly encouraged to provide support for travel for their own students so that we can provide support where the need is greatest. Considering that the number of applicants has risen sharply in recent years (to over 1800 students), departmental support is crucial so that we can accept the largest number of students.

We are attaching two posters, which we hope you will post in a prominent place. Please also circulate this announcement to students in your department.
