The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics --- Center for the Evolution of the Elements (JINA-CEE) invites applications for the twenty-fifth PAN program in summer 2018. High school students are encouraged to apply by the March 30 deadline.
PAN is a free residential summer program on the campuses of Michigan State University (co-sponsored by NSCL) and University of Notre Dame (co-sponsored by NSL). The two one-week programs introduce current high school students to the principles and methods of scientific research (focusing on current work in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics) as well as life in the university environment.
For currently-enrolled high school students: June 24-29 (ND); July 22-27 (MSU)

· Discover career opportunities in science

· Learn about research at NSCL or NSL from faculty at the cutting edge of their field

· Conduct your own experiments

· Experience the atmosphere of college life

· Receive free room and board on campus (if required)
Participants in PAN over the years have expressed great satisfaction with the experience. 100% of PAN 2017 participants agreed that they would recommend the program to friends/colleagues.
PAN is free to participants, whose only cost is travel to the program. For this reason, admission to PAN is competitive; up to forty-four students will be accepted between the two sites. More information can be found at the program website (http://www.jinaweb.org/outreach/PAN/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.jinaweb.org_outreach_PAN_&d=DwMFAw&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=45ucIEKyq0pHGO-wQTsdbRghpM6p6HwwJJKBjgpK5ZU&m=DSNQsk2uF13PRTkB5wVUn8TQTCE1KtP_1E2ihgO2FcY&s=8jADTl29mXf5y0mDbLFjVjxrPEOINHyskMYIU1YnVRo&e=>) or by contacting us directly. This program will be held June 11 to July 20, 2018, at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. Through laboratory experiments and complementary lectures, students are introduced to the practice and technical aspects of nuclear forensic science. The program will also include a field trip to Oak Ridge National Laboratory<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__ornl.gov_&d=DwMFAw&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=45ucIEKyq0pHGO-wQTsdbRghpM6p6HwwJJKBjgpK5ZU&m=DSNQsk2uF13PRTkB5wVUn8TQTCE1KtP_1E2ihgO2FcY&s=YCbnVxcxnUUriK5sYPKqb6DkVcaPP30AOwhkMyPm2qM&e=> (ORNL).

Nuclear forensics involves examining materials recovered from radiological and nuclear events of an illicit or hostile nature in order to determine their character and origin. Nuclear forensics conclusions, combined with information from law enforcement investigation and intelligence, help identify those responsible for planned and actual attacks.
Nuclear forensics supports the U.S. Government commitment to identify and hold fully accountable any state or non-state actor that willfully supports, enables, or engages in hostile weapons of mass destruction activities that threaten the United States or our allies and partners.
