Subject: student STEM symposium at Emory University

Dear Dr. Li,

I am writing to you from Emory University to alert you to an opportunity for students who have participated in your REU program at Texas A&M , as well as other undergraduate and graduate students who have had research experiences in your program.

The Third Annual Emory University-Laney Graduate School STEM Research and Career Symposium will be held September 18-20, 2016 at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta.

• Full travel and housing scholarships available for underrepresented students. Last year 60% of student attendees received full travel awards and another 10% received partial travel awards.

• Event is for undergraduates AND graduate students, and their mentors.

• Student research presentations, career development workshops and social events.

• Free application and registration.

Please encourage your best students (graduate and undergraduate) to apply to attend, and I hope that you’ll consider joining them. Students from underrepresented groups (racial minorities, disabled students and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds) will be eligible to apply for travel awards that will provide for their travel and housing. We also invite you to attend together with your student(s). Full information is available on our website (http://www.gs.emory.edu/STEM). Details of the conference are summarized below.

• A premier research conference for undergraduates interested in learning about PhD, MD/PhD or postbaccalaureate programs; graduate students contemplating postdoctoral training; and the advisors of these students.

• Two days of shared research presentations, networking and mentoring.

• Interactions with Emory research faculty mentors, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

• A round table discussion for faculty and program staff attendees with a group of Emory faculty

Please distribute the attached information to your undergraduate and graduate students, who may apply directly through our website http://www.gs.emory.edu/STEM and to your colleagues in the STEM disciplines at . The general application deadline is May 1st, 2016. (A limited number of spots will be held open for students whose first research experience is in the summer of 2016, who will be eligible for a second deadline of August 1, 2016). A committee of Emory training faculty will review abstracts to select participants and travel awardees. Due to the success of recent years' symposia and the restricted number of attendees, we expect competition for acceptance to be spirited. Only abstracts that report outcomes/results will be competitive. Awardees will be notified by mid-June or late August for the two deadlines. Up to ten students will be selected from the submitted abstracts to present a platform talk, and their advisors will also receive a travel award if necessary. All remaining student participants will be expected to present a poster on their research.

Mentors who write letters of reference for their students will be notified by e-mail whether or not the application was successful. At that time mentors will also receive information about how to register to attend with their students if they wish to do so. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at mailto:stem.symposia at emory.edu. We look forward to hearing from you and your students.

Sincerely yours,

James Kindt
