Hello everyone!

The Society of physics students will be holding their second meeting this
Thursday, September 25th, at 3:00 p.m. in room 127 of the science building.
We will have TASTY DONUTS! There are a few minor topics to discuss but
the primary objective of this next meeting will be planning our role in a
science fair in association with the American Chemical Society that will be
hosted in late October. Also, our first planetarium movie night is drawing
near so we will finalize our decision on what to watch! I hope to see many
of you this Thursday. Take care,

Alexander Spahn
Acting president of SPS

A (relatively) brief excerpt about SPS:

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association
explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters,
is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for
membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors,
our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering,
geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields.

Within SPS is housed Sigma Pi Sigma
<http://www.spsnational.org/about/sigma.htm>, the national physics honor
society, which elects members on the basis of outstanding academic
achievement. This unique two-in-one society operates within theAmerican
Institute of Physics <http://www.aip.org/>, an umbrella organization for
ten other professional science societies.
The SPS exists to help students transform themselves into contributing
members of the professional community. Course work develops only one range
of skills. Other skills needed to flourish professionally include effective
communication and personal interactions, leadership experience,
establishing a personal network of contacts, presenting scholarly work in
professional meetings and journals, and outreach services to the campus and
local communities.
