[phas-dept] BBQ! And PHAS News.

Hi, everyone, and welcome back or welcome!

We’re planning to have a Departmental BBQ on Wednesday Sept 3 at 5pm.  I really hope you can all make it - should be great food and great company.  In particular, I’d like to welcome our new Freshmen students, and invite all our students to join the Society of Physics Students (SPS).  Dr. Newton (william.newton at tamuc.edu<mailto:william.newton at tamuc.edu>) is the new Faculty Advisor for that organization.  If you’re interested in forming an Astronomy Club, you can probably talk Dr. Williams (kurtis.williams at tamuc.edu<mailto:kurtis.williams at tamuc.edu>) into being the Faculty Advisor for that.

I’d like to especially invite our new (Freshman and Transfer) students to please come introduce yourself to me (STC 106), and also to Dr. Montgomery (kent.montgomery at tamuc.edu<mailto:kent.montgomery at tamuc.edu>), who is our Undergraduate Advisor.  Please be sure to visit Dr. Montgomery when you’re selecting classes for the next semester.

Our big news is that we’re going to convert Room 111 (across from the JAMP room) into an Undergraduate Student Lounge.  We are planning to enlist SPS to help with this, but we welcome your help even if you’re not in SPS.

We’re also planning on having regular “Town Hall” meetings with the undergraduate and graduate students.  These are events where you can share your ideas, concerns, etc. with us.  What are we doing well, and what can we be doing better?  How can we more-effictively recruit students to join our programs?  We’re planning on having one of these every Fall and Spring semesters.  Please mark your calendars:

  *   Tuesday Sept 9 @ 4pm: Graduate Student Town Hall Meeting
