I am writing to encourage all of you who are interested in a career in the
sciences, math, Ag or a health profession to apply for summer 2013 research
internships and scholarships.
I have attached a pdf file which lists several opportunities for you to
explore. Most program application windows will open THIS month and all
application material will typically be due by January or February (some
programs have later deadlines, but most don't)....so if you are interested
you have a couple of months to find the programs for you, start working on
your application, obtain letters of recommendation, etc.
You can find internships with national labs, medical schools, university
departments, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Agriculture,
the National Institutes of Health, etc...there are many many options...
There are programs in chemistry, biology, physics, agriculture, medicine,
pharmacy, veterinary medicine, math, computer science etc.
I have updated and verified all of the links on the attachment except for
those under #16.
These programs are great opportunities for you. They pay a good summer
stipend (typically ~$4,000, plus room and board and some will pay travel
expenses). So, you get a tremendous experience which looks great on your
resume, you get to explore career options, you get a nice salary, you gain
skills, start establishing a network for future studies, etc. etc. You
participating in one of these programs is also a feather in the cap for
TAMU-C and it helps strengthen our own programs (when TAMU-C students
succeed we all succeed) - the knowledge that you bring back benefits faculty
and other students at TAMU-C.....plus, you get the opportunity to live
somewhere else for a summer which can help you grow personally as well.
If you are interested, there is a summer internship for you....scholarships
as well....you just have to search for it and apply...if you don't get one
this year, beef up your resume and try again the following year...
If you do not see a program on the attachment that is for you (which I think
is impossible if you are a science/ag/math major), you can Google search for
one that fits your specific interest.
My Google searches look something like below:
summer research programs 2013 in chemistry in (pick the state of your
choice)
summer research programs 2013 at a national lab
2013 scholarships for students in chemistry
I hope that many of you will apply. If I can be of any help, let me know.
Speak to faculty within your major about these opportunities as well.
Regards,
Stephen
