Friends,
If at all possible, I hope you'll join us in Commerce for the 38th annual Federation Rhetoric Symposium! Thursday/Friday, 2/5-2/6, more than a 150 faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars from around the world will converge upon Commerce for a series of presentations and interactive events exploring the conference theme "Memory: Rhetoric's Forgotten Canon." (We had Kathy Yancey last time around, if this gives you an idea of how exciting this recurring event is for us)
See http://orgs.tamu-commerce.edu/FRS for registration and details
Keynote speaker Deborah Brandt (University of Wisconsin-Madison) will kick off the event, with an address in Pride called "Memory and the Future of Literacy." Brandt is a key scholar in literacy studies. An award-winning author whose work has had a profound influence on the discipline. Full bio available at above url.
Featured speakers are Bump Halbritter and Julie Lindquist (Michigan State University). Their presentation will include the latest installment of their documentary film project LiteracyCorps Michigan. They will conclude our day of presentations with "Documenting Scenes of Participatory Media Literacy."
Their work, LiteracyCorps Michigan, draws on the work of Deborah Brandt. Brandt's work focuses on literacy practices largely dominated by print-based texts, however, while Hallbritter and Lindquist document the literacy practices of the "digital generation" across Michigan communities feeding into MSU. Professors Halbritter and Lindquist offer rich perspectives on literacy development and a new, robust methodology for digital ethnography.
Come visit with the authors and see the next installation of their documentary film!
Another series of events to help welcome our new president to the rich, vibrant, and generative collection of programs and people represented on our campus and beyond!
Yours,
Shannon Carter
Abstract and bios--
Julie Lindquist and Bump Halbritter are currently at work on LiteracyCorps Michigan
(LCM), a long-term documentary research project investigating the practices of reading, writing,
and composing of members of the "digital generation" across Michigan communities. LCM has two
primary goals: the first to address emerging questions about literacy, technology, and access to
social, educational, and technological infrastructures at the start of the 21st century; the second to
develop a robust methodology for conducting new literacy studies. LCM collects narrative data via
videotaped interviews with first-year writers at MSU to discover their experiences and practices of
mediation and to learn how these practices vary across communities, especially in relation to their
access to social and technological infrastructures. Julie and Bump have spoken about this work at
recent national conferences including NCTE, CCCC, Computers and Writing, Watson, and the
Writing Research Across Borders conference at UCSB.
Julie directs the Critical Studies in Literacy and Pedagogy program at Michigan State University,
where she also teaches courses in writing, rhetoric, language, and literacy. She is author of A Place
to Stand: Politics and Persuasion in a Working-Class Bar (Oxford Press, 2002), and has published
several essays and articles on class discourse and writing pedagogy. Her recent book (with David
Seitz), The Elements of Literacy (Longman/Pearson, 2008), is an introduction to concepts and
conversations in literacy studies.
Bump is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric and American Cultures at
Michigan State University. He is the author of Musical Rhetoric in Integrated Media
Composition (Computers and Composition) and the co-director, with Todd Taylor, of the
documentary Remembering Composition (JAC). As a member of the plenary panel at the 2008
Thomas R. Watson Conference, Bump discussed the importance of infrastructure as a determiner of
The New Work of Composing, a topic informed by his work designing and directing the MSU
Documentary Lab. Bumps research engages literacy, documentary writing, digital-video
production, and aural rhetoric.
Thanks!
