Filing Taxes as an International Student Understanding your U.S. Tax Obligations

International students are required to file a U.S. tax return even if you do not have U.S. source income. There is no minimum dollar amount of income that triggers a filing requirement for a for a foreign student. If you receive U.S. source income; including wages, a taxable scholarship or fellowship grant, you will likely have federal tax withheld from your checks (unless you benefit from a tax treaty.)

1098-T form:

Eligible educational institutions file Form 1098-T for each student they enroll and for whom a reportable transaction is made.

To access your 1098-T forms:

  1.  Go to your myLeo
  2.  Click the Student Resource tab
  3.  Under Student Information, click 1098 T to access the form .

W-2 Wage and Tax Statements

Employees can view their pay stub electronically in Workday at https://sso.tamus.edu .

W-2 Wage and Tax Statements will be sent electronically (if selected) or by mail prior to January 31 of each year. If you have changed your mailing address recently, please update in Workday.

  1.  Go to https://sso.tamus.edu .
  2.  Select Workday from the menu.
  3.  Select the Pay worklet.
  4.  Select View My Tax Documents.
  5.  Select Edit Printing Elections.

The deadline to file for taxes is April 18, 2023.
