"On the Fringes", a TAMU-C faculty recital featuring soprano Leanne Scaggs, explores the works of marginalized individuals, those living "on the fringes" of society throughout various times in history. Works presented include Fanny Mendelssohn's Sechs Lieder, Op. 7, selections from Darius Milhaud's Poèmes Juifs, Op. 34, and Ricky Ian Gordon's Genius Child, with poetry by the incomparable Langston Hughes.

The selected composers and poets represented are but a small portion of the myriads of individuals oppressed through the ages by sexism, racism, ageism, classism, and other forms of bigotry. These fine artists sought to show not only their humanity, but the humanity of their people through their works. They did not simply endure their oppression; they thrived amidst it.

Please join us for this inspirational program, as we explore what made these composers and poets so remarkable.

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson
