 SWK 597/ 497: Social Work In Costa Rica  

 

Dates: May Mini Semester (05/12 - 05/29) (this course counts as an elective)

                        There will be a mandatory pre-departure meeting with Dr. Clinton scheduled prior to the beginning of the min-semester

Travel Dates: Tuesday 05/13 depart to Costa Rica Wednesday 05/21 return to Texas

Estimated Cost including tuition: $2900 - $3200 (This is all inclusive with the exception of about 5 meals)

Agenda: We fly into San Jose, Costa Rica on 05/13 where we will stay for 4 nights. While in San Jose we will visit the School of Social Work at the University of San Jose, PANI (child welfare agency), Coffee Plantation, the Market (like a farmer's market), Department of Ministry (Prison system) and other area cultural attractions. On Saturday 05/17 we will check out of the hotel and travel into the rain forest where we will stay at the Soltis Center. While at the Soltis Center we will visit area schools, volcanoes and hike into the rain forest (possibly including a night excursion into the rain forest). We will travel back into San Jose on 05/21 where we will depart from the airport back to Texas. 

**This is a tentative plan for visiting agencies and cultural attractions depending upon scheduling

Ø You must have a passport

Ø No shots are required

This is a class created to give social work students an opportunity to experience a different culture outside of the United States and learn about the social work profession from a different perspective. This is a very intense, physically and intellectually demanding experience, but very rewarding. You will participate in discussions, complete assignments and represent the university, school of social work, Texas and the United States in a professorial manner.

Ø Interest Application due by 02/10/2014 (attached to this email)

 

Ø Non-refundable $200.00 deposit due by 03/01/2014

 

Ø Application deadline for scholarship through International Studies: March 30th, 2014

 

Ø Additional paperwork (liability packet, purchase of insurance coverage ($25.00) etc) must be completed by April 15th. (The forms and information will be given to you when you are notified you will be able to enroll in the class).
