On Friday (the 7th) we will hold our Department's annual Holiday "pot luck
luncheon" from 11-2. I believe in the last few years it has earned a
reputation for being lots of food and lots of fun.

 

As always I'll bring meats, cheeses, and all the sandwich fixins. If ya'll
will work with Barb (5200) to provide drinks, desserts, set-ups, chips and
such, as well as side-dishes and finger foods then we'll be set.

 

Just after 2pm we will also have an invited speaker - Dr. David Gorfein.

 

Dr. Gorfein's talk will be entitled "The Consequences of Meaning Selection:
A Perspective from ASM (the Activation Selection Model)." In sum, it
concerns the fact that, a very high proportion of common English words have
two or more distinct senses or unrelated meanings. A model of how the
selection of a word's meaning influences subsequent encounters with the same
word in similar or different semantic contexts will be examined.

 

This could be the last time we get to hear Paul sing - so invite all your
grad students to attend both the feasting and Dr. Gorfein's presentation.
