This is the only PR class offered; we offered J328 last spring and J425 this summer. Also, PR students should enroll in J335 and J445, for they are required of all news and public relations majors and will not be offered in the spring of 2012.

News-editorial majors should take J316 . Talk to Dr. Bridges if in doubt, but note this requirement for news and secondary ed sequence majors. We will write stories about people and topics in the community with the objective of publication in hometown newspapers. News majors should also enroll in J335 and J445, both requirements. The likelihood is neither will be offered in the spring of 2012.

J115 is full as of this writing. A request for a second section has not been granted by the interim dean, although I have asked the department head more than once for an additional section. If one becomes available, we will try diligently to spread the word for students who need the class. This course is required for enrollment in J315.

A question has been asked about J495. Yes, internship credit for the fall can be obtained, but see Dr. Bridges. You need to be approved to enroll in this course. If you need help in securing a suitable intern site, please see Dr. Bridges, Mr. Stewart or Ms. Barton for ideas. We had a solid group of majors fulfilling their internships this summer, including ones at news outlets, at public relations institutions and in web design. One student worked in Washington, D.C.

Again, I urge you to consider carefully your courses because new requirements for journalism and broadcasting students have been approved beginning this fall. The revamped sequences require more hours than the present ones. I am told these changes are posted on the Catalog pages of the University website. The Journalism Division will have an outline of requirements for students this fall, one document for those enrolled before the fall of 2011 and one form for those students entering this fall term.

But currently-enrolled students should enroll in pre-fall-2011 classes to complete their requirements.

Ms. Susan Osgood may be reached at 903-886-5239.
