Please note these comments about classes in journalism to be offered in
the spring of 2011.

(1) Journalism 495 (Internship) - you cannot enroll until you have an
approved internship and submit paperwork to Dr. Bridges. He has packets
explaining requirements. If you enroll without approval, you will be
dropped.

(2) Majors in news, public relations, or teaching should enroll in
Journalism 260; Journalism 336 may be taken if you are a junior or
senior or have permission. These two courses are only offered in the
spring semester and are required.

(3) News-editorial majors should take J314 if you have had J214. News
majors should probably take J336 (law). J314 is only offered in the
spring.

(4) Public relations majors should take J328 if beginning in the
sequence; in that way, you will be eligible to move on to J329. If you
have had J328 and/or J329, you may take J426, which is offered only in
the spring term. This is the campaigns class.

(5) Seniors with permission may take Journalism 350 (Visual
Communication for News Publications); this course will taught by Paul
Bryan, University photographer and will introduce print majors to visual
concepts, video and convergence of media outlets. It is by permission
only. The class will be limited to 12 and will be controlled for
enrollment. This would be a good elective course, which can be counted
toward your degree program, for Texan staffers and upper-level seniors
close to graduation.

(6) Journalism 315 - you must pass J115 with Ms. Barton to take J315.
The class builds upon instruction in J115.

Three points: (1) Dr. Bridges is the "official" adviser; see him with
questions or potential problems. Secondly, pre-registration helps
everyone, so please do so online if possible. Prior enrollment helps us
monitor class sizes. Thirdly, I do know now what will be offered in
summer sessions.

Last point: I anticipate a newly-combined curriculum will go into effect
for the fall term of 2011. While not drastic in change, it might be
advisable to complete current requirements unless you wish to wait and
go on the catalog for 2011-2012. Curriculum changes are being proposed
by the Department of Mass Media, Communication and Theatre but all
changes must go through all administrative channels before
implementation.

I am sorry this message is long, but I cannot meet each class.
Students have been taking advantage of prior registration, and I hope
that continues.

Dr. Lamar W. Bridges, professor
