[Intl-stu] Volunteering as an F-1 international Student

[International Students]

This semester we have had a number of international students inquiry about volunteering with companies or on-campus.  Our Employment website<http://www.tamuc.edu/campusLife/campusServices/internationalStudentServices/employment1/default.aspx> contains links to the  Student Exchange Visitor Program's (SEVP) guidance on volunteering as well as guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor.  Please review over this information and discuss these requirements with the company where you will volunteer.

The ISSS can only advise students about volunteering and we cannot "grant permission" for students to volunteer.  Volunteering involves both visa regulations and labor law/rules and we do not have the expertise to advise on labor related rules.   We recommend reviewing all of the resources linked on our website and consulting with the company's Human Resource Office or legal counsel.  If you have any questions after reviewing SEVP and the Dept. of Labor's guidance and discussing the requirements with your company please let us know.
