We would like to follow up on the recent PAWS alert about the robbery that occurred off campus on March 9. If you are walking on or off campus at night it is very important to be vigilant about safety. When walking on or off campus, keep these tips in mind:
• Walk with someone or with a group of people, especially at night.
• Keep to well-lit walkways. Avoid taking a "short-cut" through a poorly lit area.
• Let your roommate or a friend know when you are leaving and when you should arrive at your destination.
• Be observant to your surrounding.
• If you are being followed, head toward crowds, buildings, or emergency phones.
• Have your car key in your hand, ready to unlock your car as you approach your vehicle.
• Check underneath your car before getting too close and look in the backseat to make sure no one is hiding in the floorboard.
• ALWAYS keep your car locked whether you are out or in your car.
• Program the University Police Department’s emergency number into your cell phone. (903)-886-5111.
• ALWAYS lock your door especially when you are out or sleeping even if you are just “running down the hall” or “stepping out for just a moment”.
• DO NOT let strangers in your room.
• If you need to work in an isolated area, make sure someone knows where you are.
If you have any further questions or concerns you may contact the Office of International Student & Scholar Services or the University Police Department at 903-886-5868.
