For information about applying for a driver's license or state ID please go to http://www.tamuc.edu/campusLife/campusServices/internationalStudentServices/currentStudents/DriversLicenseStateID.aspx. Please note that a letter from the ISSO is no longer part of the process to apply. Don't forget the ISSO will provide a FREE shuttle to the Greenville driver's license office and SSN office this Friday, February 6 and Thursday, February 12. For more information go to https://secure.touchnet.com/C20206_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=13.

The ISSO is currently registering all enrolled F-1 and J-1 international students in SEVIS in accordance with the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) rules. Students who attempt to apply for a driver's license to when we conclude our SEVIS registration may experience issues- please see below for more information. We anticipate concluding SEVIS registration for all F-1 and J-1 international students no later than February 6.

Students who experience issues when they apply for a driver's license: Students who go apply for a driver's license may be denied because the driver's license office cannot "verify the student's immigration status." The driver's license office uses a system called SAVE to communicate with the immigration database SEVIS and unfortunately they do not communicate very well sometimes. Students will often be told that they must return to the international office to have their record updated but this guidance is incorrect. Please note that in most cases our experience has shown that there is very little our office can do if you are denied and students will be required to wait until the system has been updated or the issue is corrected with USCIS. We have attempted for years to intervene in these types of situations with no success.

IF YOU ARE DENIED A DRIVER'S LICENSE BECAUSE YOUR VISA STATUS CANNOT BE VERIFIED THEN YOU WILL NEED TO FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

* Call USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 to discuss your situation

OR

* Request the driver's license office contact their SAVE representative to review the situation
