Please note that the majority of North Texas is currently under a Tornado Watch through 10pm this evening according to local DFW news stations. For more information please tune into your local radio or television station. You may also download the Red Cross app called Tornado-red Cross that provides updates and warnings during severe weather.
* A tornado, flood, or thunderstorm watch means that the potential exists for a thunderstorm or tornado to develop. The weather conditions are conducive for severe weather to develop and it is very important to listen to your local radio or television station and be aware of the weather conditions around you.
* A tornado, flood, or thunderstorm warning means that one of these is occurring or will occur very soon and you need to take shelter or be prepared. In the case of a tornado it may mean that a tornado has been spotted and is on the ground or a developing tornado, or a tornado "funnel," has been spotted. Again, it is very important to listen to your local radio or television station and be aware of the weather conditions around you. Be sure to review the Red Cross link above for helpful information.
For more information you may review the attached Red Cross handouts or visit the Red Cross page http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster-safety-library where there are resources available in multiple languages.
If you live off-campus or outside the Commerce area and you are experiencing severe weather (tornado warning, thunderstorm warning):
* Move into a small interior room (or closet) in the home, building, or structure you are in and move away from any windows or doors.
* DO NOT go outside or get in your vehicle and drive around when a severe weather alert (tornado warning, thunderstorm warning) has been announced.
* Tune into a local radio station or television station for more information. You may also download the Red Cross app called Tornado-American Red Cross which provides updates and warnings during severe weather.
If you are on campus or live in the residence halls and Commerce is experiencing severe weather please seek shelter in a building on campus as quickly as possible. If a university faculty/staff members gives you instructions please be sure to follow their guidance. In buildings across campus you will see signs like the one below and these areas are designated severe weather shelter areas. Try to locate one of these signs in your building or move toward a small interior room away from doors and windows. DO NOT go outside or get into your vehicle and drive around when a severe weather alert has been announced. If you have not signed up for the Pride Alert Warning System (PAWS) go to http://www.tamuc.edu/campuslife/campusservices/universityPoliceDepartment/campusSafety/prideAlertWarningSystem.aspx.
