International Students intl-stu at tamuc.edu
Tue Nov 5 10:40:33 CST 2013

Some international students may have received an email like the one
below from the Registrar's Office or Charles Robnett in the
Bursar's/Financial Services Office about your social security number and
1098T. I have spoken to both offices and this email was sent a general
email sent out to many students on-campus.

International students will need to respond as stated below:

* If your DO NOT HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER then you do not
need to do anything. International students are only eligible for an
SSN if they are employed and many international students are not
eligible for the SSN. If you do not have an SSN then you do not need to
take any action.

* If you DO HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER then you will need
complete the attached Personal Identification change form and submit
this form along with a copy of the social security card to the contact
information/office on the form. It is recommended students submit their
social security card and information in person for security purposes but
you may also email or fax the form and your card. All contact
information is provided on the attached form.

As the email states below, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY CONTACT
STUDENT ACCOUNTS at Student.Accounts at tamuc.edu or by phone at
903-886-5050. DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR DOCUMENTS TO THE ISSO!

Each year the University provides information to the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) for students who were assessed qualified tuition and
student fees during the previous tax year. Students will be mailed a
1098t form by the end of January 2014 which provides notice of the
information being reported to the IRS for 2013. Students who do not have
a valid social security number of Tax ID number on file with the
University Registrar will not have a 1098t form automatically generated.
This may affect the ability of a student or parent to claim a tax
deduction or credit associated with education expenses. A review of
student records indicates that you have not provided a valid social
security number or Tax ID number to the University Registrar. IRS
regulations require that students provide a valid social security number
or Tax ID number to the University for tax reporting purposes. You may
use the IRS W9s form located online at
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irspdf/fw9s.pdf for this purpose. Please complete
and return the form W9s to the University Registrar as soon as possible
so that your student records can be updated. Completed forms may be
mailed to:

Texas A&M UniversityCommerce

Attn: Registrar's Office

P.O. Box 3011

Commerce, TX 75429

You may also fax copies to the University Registrar's Office at
9038865888. Note to student workers and graduate assistants: Social
security numbers or Tax ID numbers provided to the University Payroll
Office are not shared with the University Registrar's Office. If you
gave that information to the Payroll Office then you must also provide
it to the Registrar's Office to ensure that your student records will
reflect correct data. You may contact our office at
Student.Accounts at tamuc.edu or by phone at 9038865050 if you have any
questions or need assistance with the W9s form.

Thank you for your cooperation.
