F-1 and J-1 international students nationwide are currently experiencing
problems when they apply for a state ID/drivers license and/or a social
security number (SSN). The issue is related to the verification system,
called SAVE, that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Social
Security Administration (SSA) uses to verify student's I-20 (F visa) or
DS-2019 (J visa) and visa information. The ISSO has no direct
involvement in the SAVE system but the issue appears to be related to
the communication between the SAVE system and the SEVIS system which
controls the I-20 and DS-2019.
If you go to apply for a TX state ID/drivers license or a SSN and
experience problems please take the following steps:
* Write down the specific reason your application was denied or
delayed ( write down the specific reason when you are at the office).
If the office gives you any instructions be sure to write this down as
well
* Make sure you have the name and phone number for the person you
spoke with (be sure to get their direct number of the number for the
office you visit)
* Contact the ISSO via email, in person, or by phone and provide
your issue, the reason you were denied/delayed, any instructions you
were provided, the name of the person you spoke to, and the contact
information/address for the DMV or SSA office you visited
If the reason you were denied is related to verification in SAVE then we
have steps that we can take to resolve the issue but it may take some
time. Students are encouraged to visit the DMV or SSA offices in
Greenville because the ISSO has direct communication with these offices
and we may be able to resolve the issue faster.
Please remember the following about the SSN:
* Students may begin on campus employment and be paid without the
SSN
* F-1 and J-1 students are only eligible to apply for a SSN if
they have secured authorized employment
If you plan to apply for Curricular Practical Training employment this
semester then you are encouraged to attend the CPT workshop this Friday,
August 31 at 10am in BA 256 where we will address this issue.
