USCIS rules do not allow F-1 and J-1 international students to work
OFF-CAMPUS without prior permission of a DSO/PDSO (international advisor
in ISSO) at their school and/or USCIS. Permission to work off-campus is
granted through the issuing of an I-20 for F-1 students or DS-2019 for
J-1 students with the employment authorization on the documents and the
issuing of an Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) as required.
Having a social security card with a statement such as "employment
authorization" DOES NOT grant you permission to work off-campus.
If you work off-campus without permission from a DSO/PDSO (international
advisor in the ISSO) or USCIS then you are in violation of your status
and are jeopardizing your ability to remain in the U.S. USCIS rules
state a student caught working off-campus without permission is not
eligible to request a reinstatement to their visa status and must depart
the U.S. immediately. Don't take the chance! Don't work off-campus
without permission.
This Wednesday and Friday the ISSO will host workshops on practical
training employment that is available to F-1 students. Please be sure
to attend to learn about these options for off-campus employment during
your academic program and after you graduate.
