The ISSO is currently reviewing student registration for the Fall
semester and it has come to our attention that some international
students are registered for classes for the Fall but they have not
submitted proof of health/repatriation insurance for the entire
semester.
To remind you:
International students are required to provide proof of
medical/repatriation insurance before class registration each semester.
If the student is enrolled for courses and has not submitted proof of
medical/repatriation insurance their courses may be dropped, which could
be a violation of visa status, until proof is provided. In addition,
the student may lose CPT and/or OPT privileges.
Your insurance must be valid from August 25, 2008 through December 13,
2008 for the Fall 2008 semester. Please go to the following link for
more information on health insurance and submitting proof of health
insurance:
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Current_Students/c_
insurance.htm Proof of insurance that is provided through email MUST be
sent to intl_stu at tamu-commerce.edu.
Register for full course of study:
USCIS regulations state all international students must be enrolled
full-time each semester (except summer) unless they have been authorized
by the ISSO prior to the beginning of the semester. Permission from
your academic department or advisor is not enough. Failure to obtain
permission from the ISSO before registering for less than full-time is a
violation of your visa status. This also applies at any time during the
semester, and you are not allowed to drop below full-time during the
semester without the authorization of the ISSO.
Full-time is as follows: 9 hours for graduate students and 12 hours for
undergraduate students.
If you are enrolled less than full-time because to you are a GA or this
is your last/graduating semester please go to the following link,
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Forms/report_less_f
orm.asp
<http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Forms/report_less_
form.asp> , and fill out the form BEFORE the beginning of the Fall
semester. Please provide documentation as required.
Graduating in the Fall:
If Fall will be your last semester be sure to apply for graduation by
submitting a graduation application to the Graduation Coordinator in the
Registrar's Office. You may apply for graduation online at myLeo
<https://leo.tamu-commerce.edu/login.aspx> . You can contact the
Graduation Coordinator at 903.886.5069.
If you are enrolled for less than full-time (nine hours graduate
students, twelve hours undergraduate students) due to it being your last
semester, please be sure to fill out the reduced course load form
mentioned above.
If you are graduating in the Fall the ISSO will begin scheduling
Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment appointments starting
September 15, 2008. Please go to the following link for more
information on OPT:
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Current_Students/c_
cpt_opt.htm
OPT and CPT employment:
The ISSO will begin scheduling Optional Practical Training (OPT)
employment for students who will be graduating in the Fall beginning
September 15, 2008. The ISSO recommends applying for OPT as soon as
possible in your last semester as it takes USCIS an average of 60-90
days to approve OPT applications. The ISSO will be sponsoring OPT
workshops and hosting an immigration lawyer who will discuss OPT, H1-B,
and other immigration issues during the Fall semester. We will confirm
these dates to you at a later time. You may go to
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Current_Students/c_
cpt_opt.htm#t5 for more information.
If you are planning on applying for Curricular Practical Training
employment (CPT) you may go to
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/Fall_2004/Forms/cpt.htm for
more information on CPT and the application process.
Remember that USCIS states F-1 visa students are not allowed to begin
CPT employment or work off-campus without prior approval from their
international advisor (the ISSO) and/ or USCIS. The 3rd page of the
I-20 will reflect any authorized off-campus employment. Failure to
abide by USCIS employment rules may result in the termination of your
SEVIS immigration record and I-20.
Please remember to include your full name and CWID# with all
correspondence.
