Indian Culture Celebrated at Diwali
On Friday, November 9, 2007, the India Student Association will present its
third annual Diwali Celebration.
Diwali is one of the most important celebrations in India and is celebrated
by Hindus decorating their homes with small, earthen oil-fed lamps called
"diyas". The event welcomes Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity
into their homes. The term Diwali is the short form of the Sanskrit term
"Deepvali" a conjugation of terms "deep" (light) and "avail" (row).
The event will begin with a prayer song followed by a video presentation
which explains the historical significance behind Diwali. There will be
solo and group dances by boys and girls as well a professional troup of
Indian dancers who have agreed to perform for us for free. There will be a
classical dance and fashion show and during intermission sweets will be
served and we promise to have many more sweets this year than last year!
Last year there were approximately 250 persons in attendance and some
persons said it was one of the best attended and most enjoyable event they
had attended on campus. Please plan to attend this exceptional program. It
is free and open to everyone and is suitable for children.
