[COSEAfaculty] The Art of the Start

[Grady P Blount]

Greetings and welcome back:

We have several meetings this week and in preparation for those, I have
been particularly stricken with a video clip by Guy Kawasaki; one of the
founders behind the Apple McIntosh.

If you have 38 spare minutes, see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSlwuafyUUo

But if you don't have that sort of time, I have reproduced his talking
points in the attached pdf file. The most important point I want to
discuss at our spring college meeting on Thursday is what Guy calls
"Niche Thyself". In this context, he is referring to the ecological use
of the word "Niche. the position or function of an organism in a
community of plants and animals". I think it is absolutely appropriate
for TAMU-C as a whole and CoSEA in particular.

I also learned from Guy's talk that perhaps "mission" is not the best
word for the guiding principle we need to produce during our first year
as a new college. "Mantra" works better on several levels and we will
discuss this on Thursday. At any rate, it is worth getting our
collective brain waves synchronized.

Have a great first week back and feel free to drop by anytime.

-Grady
