Thank you all for checking in. I know it's the end of the semester, but
I need a few things from you, so please quickly read on!

1. Based on your feedback, we will cancel the poster session for this
year. I will send around a proposed draft schedule with schedule
changes, allotting the time for directed small group work following up
on Victor's talk and also "what's new" in basic writing.
2. I mistakenly thought one group was taking care of the TRAVEL award.
They are not! We need to get out the applications ASAP. Do we have 2-3
volunteers who are willing to read a month from now, January 10 ish?

3. I am sending a link to this doodle. We need to find a time for an
eboard meeting. I'm hoping that you can fill this out so we can plan
accordingly!
Hi Folks,

Hope this finds you well. I'm posting a question about CBW 2013 for your
consideration. As you know, race is our theme. We solicited poster
presentation proposals, as we did last year, to carve out a space for
new and emerging scholars. Unfortunately, the proposals we received did
not adequately (or in some cases at all) address race and basic writing.

So, the question the sub-committee is considering is:

Do we send a revised CFP around, calling more specific attention to the
need to theorize race?

--OR--

Do we cancel the poster session and instead use the time for networking
or something else?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

A draft version of the program follows below.

Liz

Here's the current draft version of the agenda.

Basic Writing and Race: A Symposium
Council on Basic Writing CCCC Preconference Workshop 2013In her 2007
Journal of Basic Writing article "Representing Race in Basic Writing
Scholarship," Carole Center reminds us that "Race, like all systemic
differences that affect power relations, affects classroom...
The Council on Basic Writing (CBW) is excited to engage with CCCC's
renewed focus on basic writing and the question of public works of
composition. Because students of color represent the majority of
students enrolled in basic writing (Orfield), the CBW seeks to highlight
questions about basic writing and race in relation to persistent social
inequalities to more effectively reach out to our students and allow
participants to focus on issues of structural and institutional racism
(Condon). We will focus on key questions from the field such as who do
we mean by *basic writers*? Who has this historically included, who does
this include now, and how are the margins for basic writing as a site
for racial justice and inclusive educational missions narrowing? How
must we, as faculty committed to basic writing, continue to ensure that
our classrooms are not doing the work of *public gatekeeping* but the
public work of equity: that they are sites of diverse and racially
inclusive teaching?
Featuring keynote and roundtable presentations by Victor Villanueva,
Scott Lyons, Beatrice Mendez-Newman, Zandra Jordan, Min-Zhan Lu, Steve
Lamos and Wendy Olsen, the workshop will also be guided by discussions
of the grounding theories of scholars such as Gilyard, Horner and Lu;
Mutnick, Kynard and Eddy; Cardenas, and Wolff Murphy; and Marshall and
Ryden. In addition to the annual gathering of basic writing faculty for
networking, this preconference workshop will offer significant
exploration to the role of race in basic writing education in the United
States and the critical relationship between basic writing and the
public work of composition.
Agenda:
1. 9-9:15 Welcome/Opening Remarks (J. Elizabeth Clark)
2. 9:15-10:00 *Toward a Political Economy of Basic Writing Programs* by
Victor Villanueva, Keynote Address (William Lalicker, introduction and
moderator)
One way to define *political economy* is to consider the relations
between economics and systems of power, like decision-making bodies.
Basic Writing programs have always been subject to rhetorical,
legislative, and economic conditions in the ways that traditional
first-year programs have not. Villanueva will discuss the rises and
falls of basic writing programs from the perspective of political
economics as it obtains in rhetoric, including his own experiences in
keeping basic writing programs alive.
3. 10:00-12:00 Race, Locality, and the Public Work of Basic Writing
(Sugie Goen-Salter, moderator)
This featured presentation slot will bring together basic writing
educators from around the United States focused on the public work of
basic writing, with particular focus (broadly defined) on issues related
to race, racial injustice and critical race studies. Following a
practice begun in 2012, the participants will be selected by an open
call/poster session where local models for success are featured,
including but not limited to: preparing and supporting students of
color; preparing and supporting faculty of color; innovative programs;
responding to local challenges; basic writing and race; basic writing
and social inequality; basic writing and racial justice; meeting
challenges and attacks on basic writing programs; and making the work of
basic writing part of the public fabric of our communities.
Lunch Break
1:00-2:00 Roundtable on Race, Language, and Access: Possible Futures of
Basic Writing (Steve Lamos & Wendy Olson, moderators)

An interactive roundtable addresses the following themes: BW and
whiteness; the role of BW in Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs);
race-conscious BW pedagogies; BW and *Generation 1.5* students; and
other related issues. Speakers will offer brief responses to one theme,
then move to facilitate a small group discussion. In closing, small
groups will report back to the larger group with observations and/or
suggestions for future directions.
Featuring: Scott Lyons, Beatrice Mendez-Newman, Zandra Jordan, Min-Zhan
Lu
2:00-4:00: Publishing/Grant Writing Workshop (Hannah Ashley and Susan
Naomi Bernstein, moderators)
In this session, workshop participants are invited to bring ideas for
articles, abstracts, and grants. Break out groups with published
mentors will work to assist participants with publishing and grant
questions and concerns.
4:00-5:00 Public Work and Local Contexts (Greg Glau and Lynn Reid,
moderators)
This last segment of the day will focus on small group networking,
helping basic writing educators to make connections across local
contexts. We will connect people with similar interests to continue to
build structures to support basic writing instructors outside of the
annual CBW Workshop at CCCC.
Hi Friends,

Hope this finds you well. Happy fall! I can hardly believe that the
leaves are already starting to fall. I wanted to touch base on 3
things:

1. First, my thanks to Michael Hill who stepped in to informally
moderate what was a strange (but not nasty yet...) discussion on the
CBW-L over grammar. I appreciate you stepping in & I thank everyone for
thinking about when we might need to help moderate discussions.

2. We need to send out the call for folks who want to present at the
poster session at CBW. I think this went well last year. Do you have
any critiques/suggestions before I send out the call about how to
strengthen that part of the CBW day? Things I should keep in mind?

And, WHO WOULD LIKE TO READ SUBMISSIONS? We'll need a few readers to
read & rank submissions.

3. If you haven't already, might those of you who are chairing
sub-committees nudge them to begin their work?

Hope all's well.

Best,
