Hi All,
I'm coming late to the discussion--I think I'll blame my students. In any event, there are some great ideas being bandied about here. It seems like we're coming to some consensus and I don't want to disrupt that consensus, but I'd like to add three or four cents on the various topics:

Title
Sexy or not, Liz's suggestion--"BW and Race: A Symposium"--has a classic, even authoritative, ring to it. I think it works well as both a title for the workshop and a claim about our scholarship.

Keynotes
Villanueva would be exciting and energizing for the workshop. He also adds a heft to the importance of our workshop. I am a bit concerned about Powell though. As beautiful, moving, and important as her chair's address was last year, it contained no mention of BW. We were noticeably absent in the string of rhetorics that were listed that might expand field. And, frankly, it was her program that spurred us to make our Sense of the House Motion a couple of years ago. While I can see the political value in reaching out to her, I am not certain that the CBW should be holding her up as a keynote. If we need another keynote, we might think about some colleagues that could move the CBW toward more definitive work. Here are two suggestions along those lines: Valerie Kinloch, a colleague of mine from grad school, might allow us to start thinking about the work our individual BW programs, and by extension the work the CBW amongst our programs, do in the communities that surround us. Linda Addler-Kasner might allow us to start thinking about program development and the institutional effect that CBW might have.

Poster Session
If we're going big name on keynotes, why not use the poster session to invite less experienced scholars in? We might use the poster session to encourage the participation of our 2 Yr college colleagues (yes, my colors are showing) and our contingent faculty colleagues. If we focused the call to those two bodies and asked for poster presentations on local site and classroom practice studies of race and BW, I think we might come up with a strong session. This call, incidentally, could gel nicely with Tinberg's conference call.

Program Organization
It may be that one keynote and the Lamos/Olson roundtable (could we add someone like Kinloch in there?) would be anchors enough for the morning and afternoon session. We could balance those sessions with the poster presentations in the morning and some variation of the breakout discussion/work groups we've had at the last two workshops in the afternoon. If that discussion asked groups to focus on where we go from here in our classrooms, in our scholarship, in our programs, in our communities and in the CBW, we would provide a fruitful topping to the theme of the day. That topping would also lead nicely into a roundtable on publishing and grant writing.

Thanks for inviting me into the discussion. I am both honored and thrilled to be involved.
Mike

Michael D. He left Concordia to take a position at Syracuse, but I see (via a quick web search) that he's no longer listed among Syracuse faculty.
>
> Anyway, to make a short story shorter, ... I can certainly try to find out where he's teaching now and ask if he'd be willing to join such a panel. However, if someone knows Scott better than I do, that individual should make the contact. I've changed my last name since I worked with Scott, so I'd have no immediate and useful name recognition.
>
> Michelle
>
> -----Original Message-----
> From: cbw_exec-bounces@tamu-commerce.edu [mailto:cbw_exec-bounces@tamu-commerce.edu] On Behalf Of J. REPLY ALL! REPLY ALL!
>
> You guys are AMAZING! We are going to have a great year. I've been listening to this conversation and I'm excited about the great ideas we have here, the ways this is pushing our work ahead, and the ways we are thinking of new ideas and new directions. I also particularly appreciate Steve and Hannah's careful thoughts about what direction we should go in.
>
>
> Thanks to Shannon for getting our new EB folks on the list. I've added Wendy Olsen into the conversation since she and Steve may lead a roundtable for us. So, please do continue with "reply all" here so Wendy can see the conversation.
>
>
> I'm going to attempt to distill this conversation to move us towards a consensus for the program so we can get invitations out to folks. I think (?) this is a combination of the ideas we've passed around, spinning off of the text that Steve and Cheryl shared with us.
>
>
> I think we've agreed that we want to focus on Basic Writing and Race. Great!
>
>
> I think we should approach Victor Villanueva and Malea Powell for keynotes to start. Bill, can you contact Victor? Does anyone know Malea? If not, I will e-mail her.
>
>
> Steve and Wendy, I'd love to do a roundtable featuring both of you and your work on BW and whiteness. Do you want to add in Scott Lyons? People were very excited by this! If you are willing to do the roundtable, I think it would be a GREAT addition! Who knows Scott personally?
>
>
> In addition to the keynotes, I think we should do the poster session again. We don't need to work this out now, it can be a placeholder in the program and we can send to the CBW-L list later, as we did last year. That worked well, but I want to give it a little more time next year--I think it was a little rushed.
>
>
> I would also like to add in a roundtable on publishing and grant writing at the end of the day, since that's something we've seen interest in on the CBW Facebook page and other forums.
>
> If we do 2 keynotes, 2 roundtables, and an extended poster-session, we have a lovely program.
>
>
> What do you think?
>
>
> I have not included, here, Ian Marshall.
