Certainly drill and skill is not part of the rubric, but, obviously, there is much to include in a statement that takes the field in a direction we would like to see it go. This is a fairly large task that might take quite a long time, but I think it's worth getting started on--indeed, we might devote much or all of an entire workshop on BEGINNING it. The "final" statement would yet be a work in progress, revised periodically.
I certainly think this falls under Institutionalization--documents that provide the backbone to the work.

Isn't it amazing that the field is so wide still: I know I must sound like an ingénue, but how can it be that at one institution there are exclusive drill and skill demands and at the another autoethnography? This conflict means something, which we need to continue to take up, IMHO.
Dear CBW Exec Board:

Might I add one more item to the agenda of one of the upcoming BW venues for exploration of this important issue: a possible outcomes statement for basic writing. Please see Michael's query, which he gave me permission to share.

Thanks, Michael! Thanks everyone!
Hi, Michael--

I absolutely remember you. What fun! I also really sympathize with your situation, and I really wish I knew of something like this to which I could direct you. That's exactly what CBW should be doing next. We only just formulated a mission statement, but this sounds like a good next goal.

May I share your query with the CBW Executive Board? They'll be meeting together next week and can place this on the agenda for exploration. It sounds like an important activity for this organization.

Thanks, Michael.
Subject: Basic Writing Outcomes?

Hi Shannon--

I donıt know if you remember me from the most recent Cs, but we had a fun
dinner with Kelly Ritter on the last night. I could use some help, and Kelly
thought youıd be just the person. Iıll try avoid the long version of the
story, but Iım dealing with a situation involving a basic writing course. I
am the Acting Director of the Writing Program while Melissa Ianetta is on
sabbatical. Melissa did away with our basic writing course after an
assessment revealed that we didnıt need one. Instead, we have a
low-enrollment first-year writing course that has the same outcomes as any
other first-year writing section.

However, we have a Summer Enrichment Program on campus that still offers our
otherwise defunct basic writing course. As best I can figure out, this
course has no outcomes and has never been assessed by the SEP. Iım going to
be receiving the syllabus for the basic writing course soon, and Iım
expecting to see a big mess.

I was wondering, then, if there are any recommended outcomes for basic
writing courses, if there are such things apart from the WPA Outcomes
Statement. I have a feeling that the current incarnation of the basic
writing course is grammar instruction and inauthentic writing assignments.
All Iıve heard from the SEP director is that the course is supposed to
³prepare students for the first-year writing course,² and thatıs it. I donıt
really know what that means. Therefore, Iıd like to be able to point to
theoretically-sound, research-based recommendations for whatıs supposed to
happen in a basic writing course, since Iım pretty sure thatıs not
happening.

Any resources you could point me to would be most appreciated. Sadly, I
wonıt be going to the Cs this year, otherwise I would buy you a drink as a
thank you!

Best,
