Liz & colleagues,

The social justice initiative I wrote for BWe in 2009 (http://orgs.tamu-commerce.edu/BWE/7.1_Backup/7.1-9.html) has a link to this 1974 position statement for "motivated but inadequately prepared college students" (http://www.ncte.org/positions/statements/inadequatelyprepared).

There is also this powerful statement from "Students' Right to Their Own Language": "Perhaps the most serious difficulty facing "non-standard" dialect speakers in developing
writing ability derives from their exaggerated concern for the least serious aspects of
writing. If we can convince our students that spelling, punctuation, and usage are less
important than content, we have removed a major obstacle in their developing the ability
to write." (first sentence at the top of page 12 http://www.ncte.org/library/NCTEFiles/Groups/CCCC/NewSRTOL.pdf).

If I find anything else, I'll let you know. Meanwhile, looking forward to speaking with everyone at the Exec Board meeting, but sorry to miss you all in person in St. Louis. Wishing everyone who attends a wonderful time! If you happen to be in NYC next weekend, I'm giving a presentation about Occupy at Left Forum at Pace University. Here's a link to the facebook event page with more information.http://www.facebook.com/events/143322885790371/

Finally, kudos to Liz and her CCCC panel, for the wonderful discussions on the CBW facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groups/50538806660/. We've added so many people to the page in the last month-- and the conversations are really flowing! :-)
Looking forward to seeing you on the 21st at our board meeting. A quick question as we get ready for C's. Does anyone know/remember/ have information about:

Does CCCC/NCTE have an official position statement on Basic Writing? A quick search of the on-line site reveals nothing.
Any back history I don't know about?
