Hi Liz,

The lack of such a policy was the initial purpose of proposing the Social Justice Initiative back when Kathleen & I co-chaired CBW in the 00s. And yes-- I definitely agree that the absence of such a policy is a noticeable lacuna in NCTE history. It may be worth looking at recent events in the UK, as a point of contrast for post-secondary admissions policies. Here's the link from this week's IHE article: http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2012/03/08/admissions-reforms-unsettle-british-universities
Thanks so much for this. It's a very comprehensive list. We'll chat about this at our meeting on Tuesday, 3/20, but we think it's markedly noticeable that there isn't an official NCTE position statement....
There is also this powerful statement from "Students' Right to Their Own
Language": "Perhaps the most serious difficulty facing "non-standard"
dialect speakers in developing
writing ability derives from their exaggerated concern for the least
serious aspects of
writing. If we can convince our students that spelling, punctuation, and
usage are less
important than content, we have removed a major obstacle in their
developing the ability
to write." (first sentence at the top of page 12

If I find anything else, I'll let you know. Meanwhile, looking forward to
speaking with everyone at the Exec Board meeting, but sorry to miss you all
in person in St. Louis. Wishing everyone who attends a wonderful time! If
you happen to be in NYC next weekend, I'm giving a presentation about
Occupy at Left Forum at Pace University. Here's a link to the facebook
Finally, kudos to Liz and her CCCC panel, for the wonderful discussions on
the CBW facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groups/50538806660/. We've
added so many people to the page in the last month-- and the conversations
are really flowing! :-)
Peace and take good care,
