So, Lynn, it looks like you were right: you and I are to arrange a panel that CBW will propose to CCCC as a featured session. And it appears from the emails that have been flying around that you and I will be on it, Steve Lamos will be respondent. Other possibilities are Mike Rose and Bruce Horner. Mike is rumored to not travel much any more because of back problems (although he was in New Orleans at AERA last week, so it is possible that he could be coerced into appearing). Bruce Horner is speaking at the workshop, but might be willing also to speak on the featured session panel. Mary Soliday, author of The Politics of Remediation, seems like another possiblity. I would be happy to contact Mike and then Bruce and then Mary to fill out the panel.

I agree with Hannah that "What's New in Basic Writing" doesn't have a lot of pizazz. But, to me, "Forces Pushing on BW" shifts the focus to foundations and government agencies, while I would prefer to keep the focus on basic writing and how it is changing and should change as a result of recent developments. As I see it, a perfect storm of changes threatens the future of bw:

• our national focus (and the focus of most universities) has shifted away from open access and basic studies
• a number of recent studies (particularly by the Community College Research Center at Columbia U) have concluded that bw has not been nearly as successful as those of us involved in it had hoped
• the recent emphasis on college completion has made it seem riskier to admit high risk students
• the financial crisis has reduced the resources available.

How we in bw can respond to these changes seems to me to be an appropriate focus for the panel. Reactions? Other ideas?
Just catching up too. So, Peter, would you contact Lynn and see if the two of you can head up/organize a panel that might be considered for a featured panel? I don't love a "What's New in Basic Writing?" theme, or rather title, just because I think it won't sound scholarly enough to be featured. I think something "bigger." Liz and I talked a while ago about an important topic being the forces pushing on basic writing (including things like there a few big funders out there like Gates and Lumina doing college access work and how does that influence things, just for example). But I am sure if you and Lynn move forward and ask whomever else makes sense, you will figure out something.

So, you will do this Peter?
David is going to be away in England and will not be at CCCC. Hannah
contacted him about doing the workshop & he very nicely turned us down.
I *thought* Mike Rose couldn't travel? But, if he could be there, that
would be AWESOME!
What about David Bartholomae and Mike Rose, who were also discussed that
Saturday morning. I would be happy to contact them, it that seemed like
a good idea . . .
Hi all:

Many thanks for mentioning me in the context of this CBW panel: I'm very
flattered!

I am, however, already working with Kelly and Shannon on a different
panel.

I'd certainly be happy to serve as a respondent if the other presenters
think it appropriate. But, if not, then I'll just make sure to be an
attentive member of the audience...

Hi Liz:

Actually, I've asked Steve to be on a separate panel (not BW-specific)
with me and he's agreed. So, I think you could see if he wants to do a
second, but it would have to be "respondent" then for the CBW one.

[I don't mean to speak for him--just weighing in for time's sake if
people are planning]
Peter--I'm so glad that you think this will work for a preconference
names/etc. for the workshop. We can also work out timings and what will
work best for you all.

Regarding the featured panel, I too, am suffering from too many e-mails!
(What a lovely problem to have, folks, on the CBW site, right?).

Here's where I *think* we're at on the featured session:

You and Lynn volunteered (?) to head this up. I think we should add
Steve Lamos to the panel and call it "What's new in Basic Writing?" or
something like that. Given your national work on ALP, I think it's very
appropriate for your work to be featured.
Liz,

Sorry to be so slow in responding. My school's email system has been
down for the past day and a half, so now I'm trying to get caught up.

I, too, find all this energized discussion very invigorating, and I
thank you and our EB colleagues for trying to find just the right
balance of offerings. The suggestion of an all-day CBW workshop with
ALP included for a couple of hours would be fine with us. Including
Bruce Horner will be great. And we ALP folks will be happy to make
parts of our presentation more interactive.

Our original idea for a workshop was focused on issues involved in
starting up an ALP program at schools who were considering such a course
of action. That doesn't seem a good fit as part of your workshop, so
what we'll do is an overview of ALP and reports on several studies we
have conducted investigating how well the program works and why.

I haven't seen much discussion--although it may be in some email limbo
where messages go when the server is down--of the featured session
during the conference. At one time my name was mentioned as part of a
panel to include, possibly, David Bartholomae, Lynn Troyka, Bruce
Horner, and Mike Rose. Somehow my name seems a little out of place in
such an illustrious group, and it would perhaps be piggish of me to ask
to be included in the workshop and the featured session.

With that in mind, I suggest we go to work on contacting the others on
the above list and inviting them to present on the featured panel. I
think they'll do fine without me.
Liz, I like this structure very much. We have a broad theory+history
framework from Bruce Horner, then the excellent practices of ALP from
Peter Adams, and then our open-call invitation to new voices in BW. I
think this will be a very stimulating and productive workshop.

The one detail that came up in the EB meeting is that several
individuals thought we had, possibly, too many voices, without enough
time for reflection and discussion, in the open-call conference section,
so we may want to adjust the length of the talks and the q+a in that
last segment. Once we've got that settled, we can go to the whole list.

Happy Monday...
