I'm on vacation in Seattle but am following this thread when I get to the computer. Plans for next year's CBW workshop seem to be evolving through this discussion, and I agree with Bill that the structure proposed by Liz has many advantages. I also support many of the points Kathleen made in her post about the advantages of sticking with the full-day format for the CBW workshop.

I'll stay tuned to see how the planning evolves from here.

Rebecca

On Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 4:29 AM, Lalicker, William <WLalicker@wcupa.edu> wrote:

The one detail that came up in the EB meeting is that several individuals thought we had, possibly, too many voices, without enough time for reflection and discussion, in the open-call conference section, so we may want to adjust the length of the talks and the q+a in that last segment. Once we've got that settled, we can go to the whole list.
Subject: Re: [CBW_Exec] FW: Wednesday workshop question

Hi Everyone,

I am so excited by all of this conversation & these ideas! I think we
are all still basking in the glow of the energy from CCCC.

I know that we had very definite ideas about the pre-conference session
at the EB meeting. What if we shift that to put all of this together:

The theme of the conference is "gateways"

What if we focused our preconference session on Basic Writing as an
essential gateway to college:

1. Bruce Horner, who Hannah and I invited to speak, would like to join
us if the timing works out. So:

1. Welcome
2. Opening Remarks on the year (updates, what we've done, maybe mission
statement, etc.)
3. Bruce Horner, framing issues in Basic Writing
4. Extended ALP panel (2 hours? 3 hours?) feature ALP as one
contemporary iteration of Basic Writing that provides a gateway.
LUNCH BREAK
5. Open panels by our open call (2 hours)
6. Smaller working group session (1 hour or so on
CBW/Mission/Charter/etc.)

That gives us 3 featured speaker slots: Bruce, ALP, and the open call
panelists plus some working time.

It's different from what we were planning. What do you think?

I don't want to take away from either ALP or CBW.
Thoughts?
Hi, all,

I may have missed some of this conversation--that time of the
semester--but I tend to agree with Kathleen and others who've noted
that, somehow, a half-day workshop does not seem as "important" as a
full-day workshop, and I think that's true from the Cs' perspective as
well as those attending the workshop.

I also wonder if CBW did a half-day and Peter's group did a half day, if
they might end up competing with one another, as none of us has control
over morning or afternoon scheduling?

I also wonder if Peter's workshop could somehow be folded-into the CBW
workshop, as a special feature for the all-day workshop?

thanks,

So here's how this idea got started. The folks here and at several
other schools offering ALP wanted to propose a pre-conference workshop
on ALP. I wrote the co-chairs of CBW to ask whether having a second
one-day workshop on bw would be seen as a sign of the health of bw at
CCCC or might it, in fact, threaten that health by having two workshops
competing for the same attendees.

I offered that if competing for the same attendees seemed like a bad
idea, we could postpone our workshop for a year. Liz suggested that two
half-day workshops might be the best compromise, but thought we should
ask the EB. So we are.
Subject: Re: [CBW_Exec] FW: Wednesday workshop question

Thank you for the discussion on this issue. I would hate to see CBW go
to a half
day. This full- day preconference is the ONE chance that many folks
involved in
BW get to participate in the scholarship of our field. If we try to get
it all
in three hours, we just don't have the impact that a full day makes
possible.
The workshop sets up the conference for the 20-50 people who are able to
attend.

I also think that cutting it to a half day lessens the impact of the
Sense of
the House Motion. If we don't believe that BW warrants a full day, why
should it
be considered for featured sessions or its own strand?

Think of how many ideas we suggested for the precon. We basically had to
narrow
it to only two, and then choose from those. If we cut that time in half,
we are
necessitating the removal of half the content. And part of the draw is
the
workshop format, which is possible in part because of the length of time
we have.

ALP is a proven program, it will continue to have positive effects where
it is
implemented, and it should be one of the ideas supported by CBW. I think
it was
even part of the precon a couple of years ago. I just don't think we
should
halve what we offer for it or any other program, no matter how
promising.

While I see alternative points, I suggest that we continue with the
planned
full-day preconference. kb

> ALP definitely should have its own workshop. It is an important
> innovationthat deserves its own time slot and audience, and that
> fully complements the
> work of CBW.
>
> However, a full-day CBW workshop would have a different goal than the
> separate halves of an ALP or a CBW workshop. CBW helps to create new
> scholarship in the field -- and to foster a discussion on new
> scholarshipfor people just beginning and/or overworked and under-
> resourced in the
> field. In other words, CBW's full-day workshop serves
> teacher/scholars who
> otherwise would not have access to new scholarship or to the
> resources for
> creating new scholarship.
>
> But I also believe the $40 full-day workshop price keeps lots of
> folks away.
> Prompted by Barbara Gleason, we tried to initiate a conversation
> with CCCC
> about changing the price when Kathleen and I were chairs, but to no
> avail.
> SO: I would support a full day for CBW, but would agree to a 1/2
> day if
> that's the general consensus-- with one caveat. If we decide on a
> half day
> for St. Louis in 2012, we need to revisit doing a full-day again
> for Vegas
> >> audience. A different way to compromise would be for us simply
> to postpone
> >> our idea a year, which we'd certainly be willing to do. Or, we
> could take
> >> the risk of offering both and letting those proverbial "chips"
> fall.>>
> >> Would you like to see what the EB says about the question?
> >> Hope you're well. I think it's definitely important for you to
> have an
> >> audience for ALP at CCCC. Is there someway we might join forces?
> For>> example, if you did an ALP workshop from 9-12 and then joined
> us from
> >> 1-4? Or, would that make your day too short? Just brainstorming
> here.>>
> >> Hannah and Liz,
> >>
> >> As you know, at CCBC we have developed an accelerated approach
> to basic
> >> writing we call ALP, which has met with considerable success in
> >> improving students' success rates. More than twenty schools
> across the
> >> nation are now piloting some sections of ALP and many more are
> >> interested.
> >>
> >> My colleagues and I have been thinking about proposing a pre-
> conference>> workshop at CCCC on starting up ALP but we are worried
> about the effect
> >> that might have on the CBW workshop. On the one hand, it might
> be a
> >> sign of the healthiness of basic writing if there were two
> workshops,>> both on basic writing. In the other hand, we might
> end up splitting the
> >> audience and ending up with 15 or 20 at each session.
> >>
> >> So I thought I'd ask what you think. Would you view our
> offering such a
> >> workshop as a sign of the health of the field or as a
> competition that
> >> is unhealthy for both of us?
