Dear Colleagues,

First of all, I'd like to second Rebecca's suggestion about meeting on Wednesday in the same room as the workshop-- including the short break after the workshop and the communal dinner after the meeting.

Second, very cool to read your updates! Kudos for all the good news.

Third, my update: I've had a quiet year here in Queens (except for the tornado in September and the record snowfall)-- and the quiet has proven to be a catalyst for writing. This year, I've begun "Beyond the Basics," a blog for Bedford Bits on teaching BW (http://blogs.bedfordstmartins.com/bits/author/devenglish/), and am working on the 4th edition of Teaching Developmental Writing, which will be out by next year's CCCC.

Shannon already mentioned our co-edited double issue of BWe, and I also have an article in the current issue of Modern Language Studies. Perhaps most gratifying of all, I've finished a complete draft of my book about learning and teaching writing: "Writing Through ADHD: A Memoir of Difference."

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Atlanta very soon, and good wishes for a productive year for those not taking the 2011 CCCC journey. Safe travels to all-- no matter where they take you!

Peace and best,

Dear Exec Board--So nice to hear people's personal and professional news and goods.

Here's mine: As you know, I wasn't planning to come to CCCC because I was expecting a newborn to be born right then, a newborn who I will raise as my own, though I am not the birth mom. Turns out, Maxwell was a couple weeks early, but at this point, too
late to shift schedules and come. Anyway, he is perfect and the birth mom is great and so I am reinventing family as we speak.

Lots of busy-ness on the work front too, including being part of a grant to create a Minor in Urban Education with a Civic Engagement focus. I am also in the process of applying to be a full professor, which for us is a two-year process. So some of my
colleagues like to say that these are the Years of Yes on campus for me!

Have fun in Atlanta and I will be doing one more year as Co-Chair, with Liz, so you haven't gotten rid of me yet.

Hello everyone,

I think I just succeeded in adding my responses to the Doodle Poll. It looks as if meeting right after the Wed. workshop may be the best alternative. I'd suggest meeting in the same room after a short break and following up with a communal dinner. I suggest
meeting in the room since it's usually very hard to hear in a restaurant.

Here is my good news:

My news is similar to Alan's. I have actually retired from CUNY as of the end of January. I decided to take advantage of CUNY's early retirement incentive, but my real incentive wasn't monetary but the arrival of a 2nd little granddaughter in Mountain
View, California. Naomi Atalanta was born at the end of September, and her big sister, Liberty, is an active two-and-a-half-year-old. I am thoroughly enjoying these little ones and want to be part of their crucial early years.

My retirement means that I will be stepping down as co-editor of JBW. The good news is that two wonderful co-editors will take over the journal's leadership, Prof. Hope Parisi of Kingsborough (who will be attending the CBW workshop this year)
and Prof. Cheryl Smith of Baruch College. I'll still be involved but much less so as consulting editor.

All of this is to make enough time in the day for my new job as coordinator of CUNY's Pipeline Program--a mentoring program for outstanding CUNY undergraduates from underrepresented groups who are interested in pursuing careers in college teaching and
research. This program is run out of the CUNY Graduate Center, so I'm finding myself there several times a week, which is convenient for meeting with Ph.D. students in composition. I'm still serving on about 10 doctoral committees of students who were in my
classes at the GC over the years.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you in Atlanta.

Hello, CBW EB!

And so it appears while I was looking the other way CCCC landed on my doorstep. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

My deepest apologies for being out of the loop. In "good news" I'll tell you more about why, but for now:

1. When shall we meet? Some of you were able to respond to Hannah's Doodle poll @

http://doodle.com/27fpqwnwiwnzg2dnhzhs6sei/admin#table

>From what we have thus far, it appears no time is going to work for everyone. Kelly Ritter has made arrangements to stay an extra day, which opens up several options Saturday afternoon. Please consider those options when filling in the Doodle poll. If I'm
remembering correctly, many of our CBW EB members must leave by Friday, but let's get a better understanding of what's possible on that front. I may be able to stay through Saturday if need be, as well.

Suggestion: After CBW meeting, if everyone isn't too fried. Could meet after/over dinner, perhaps in the same room. I know everyone won't be available, but we can do some good business online before and after.

2. Attached are the minutes from the 2010 meeting. Please review. Send potential agenda items to me (and Hannah, with Liz). We will compile this week and send out agenda early next, along with meeting time and place once decided. At that time, we will also
send finalized agenda for CCCC workshop (CBW Program) and SIG.

3. Good news! Following the CBW EB tradition of beginning with good news since we last met (and following Hannah's great lead of requesting that info be shared online), I'm requesting that we share with one another some good news since Louisville.

Been some exciting stuff happening for me since we last met.
a. Personal stuff: Got married (!) and moved into our new home
Professional stuff:
b. Susan and I published the 2009/2010 Double Issue of BWe.
c. I published article in latest issue of Computers and Composition Online, with colleagues Adkins and Dunbar-Odom
d. Leave last fall to complete work on second book project, which also lead to completing our first documentary on the subject and several grants (still pending)
e. With Deborah Mutnick, I hosted (just last week!) a conference on our campus with theme Writing Democracy (http://writingdemocracy.weebly.com). We'll also be co-editing a special issue of Community
Literacy Journal on the subject. Pumped about that.
f. With Laurie Grobman, Jenn Fishman, and a cast of others, we just submitted a CCCC Task Force statement on Undergraduate Research.
e. With Bump Halbritter, it seems we may publish a special issue of Kairos dedicated to digital scholarship by undergraduates.
f. With a graduate student and help of local history librarian, I was able to install a Texas Historical Marker at the oldest African American church in Commerce, the first to commemorate a building in this historically segregated neighborhood.
List goes on. I'll stop there. A good year, though a busy one. ;)
