Hi everyone,
This looks good to me too (with Rebecca's edits). I have asked Mary
Soliday and will let you know her response just as soon as I can.
>
> Attached, please find two documents for your review: (1) the CFP,
> which I?d love for us to begin circulating in the next couple of
> days (I?ve added your recommended changes and would love for you to
> give it another close read before we start sending it out); (2) a
> rough schedule for the workshop itself (not yet a proposal but will
> be soon).
> A few questions:
>
> We?d like to invite Rebecca Mylanarcik and Mary Soliday to open the
> event (see rough schedule). We definitely need a speaker or two who
> can help us situate the 2011 conversations within the history and
> future of BW.
>
> Rebecca: Are you available? Interested?
>
> Sugie: Do you think Mary might be available and interested in this?
> Kicking off our day in keynoter position? Would you mind asking?
>
> Kelly Ritter?s Before Shaughnessy is another fine work that helps
> move that conversation along, but she?s in meetings with CCCC EB
> all day. She?s generously offered to slip out to address our group
> after lunch, which sounds most excellent to us (again, check out
> schedule)
>
> 2. Can you do a close edit of the CFP and let me know if it is
> ready to circulate?

We Are Not Alone: Strategic Coalition Building Across (Contested) Spaces
Serving Basic Writers

Access to higher education has rarely been more important or more contested.
In fact, colleges and universities across the nation find themselves no less
vulnerable in this fight for dwindling resources than the struggling masses
knocking at their doors.

In many cases, BW programs are the first to go (Soliday 2002, 2004: Greene
and McAlexander 2008; Otte and Mlynarczyk 2010). Long committed to serving
writers otherwise denied admittance, such programs draw their very existence
from increasingly contested spaces.

We are not alone. In fact BW?s very survival may depend on an ability to
recognize and build strategic coalitions across the same programs and
services with which a great many of us now compete?student support services,
TRIO programs, adult l iteracy programs, ESL programs, and others across area
colleges, schools, universities, and communities.

Like many BW programs, these services identify with core objectives
including:
? serving the literacy needs of first-generation and underrepresented
students, including underrepresented minority students;

? offering personalized instruction that both recognizes students?
existing strengths and promotes intellectual and literate growth;

? offering individual and small-group support designed to improve
student retention and graduation rates;

? helping students to meet linguistic ?standards? even while
recognizing and cultivating linguistic and literate diversity; and

? making campus environments, especially during the first two years of
instruction, more friendly, welcoming, and supportive to students from
diverse backgrounds.

At the 2011 CBW conference in ! At lanta, Georgia, we invite participants to
consider-- invoking th e conference theme??all our relations.? When
establishing productive responses to what appears to many as the systematic
dismantling of basic writing programs across the nation, how can we build
strategic coalitions with those we already think of as ?our relations? and,
perhaps, those we might currently think of as ?beautiful enemies??

In other words, participants at CBW 2011 will explore together questions
like the following:

? As a field, what are BW?s core values and objectives?

? Where might we find others who share BW?s core values, and what might
all partners involved gain from strategic coalition building? How can we
work with others who may not share all or even some of our core values?

? How might CBW help build and sustain productive relations and
coalitions across campuses, communities, and regions?especially as these
?relations? share and build upon BW?s core values?

? What resources (financial and othe rwise) might BW programs and newly
formed (or well established) strategic coalitions productively target
together, and how?

? How might we (including ?all our relations?) further establish
productive and sustainable systems for communicating BW?s core and common
goals (and needs) with campus administrators, community members, policy
makers, and taxpayers?

? Where has BW been? Studies like Kelly Ritter?s Before Shaughnessy
(2009) and Mary Soliday?s The Politics of Remediation (2002) remind us BW
didn?t begin with Open Admissions. What can we learn by investigating
different origin stories, perhaps those from which our own institutions? BW
programs originated?

? Where should BW be headed? Given increasingly scarce resources for
all Americans, what might BW?s future be? In all of this, what can the
Council on Basic Writing do to help?

? What has already been lost, who ! ha s lost it (what communities? what
relations?), and what can we d o to make these losses visible and tangible to
our colleagues and to the general public?

? What can we do in coalition with under-served communities to
regenerate improved and sustained access to Basic Writing for those who have
lost it? In what ways can we support communities that have lost the most?

? In what ways can the conversations and innovations of our field
engage current stakeholders in the higher education reform movement (such as
state legislatures, private foundations, and the Department of Education)?

? What can we do to improve working conditions and opportunities for
research and other kinds of professional development, for contingent
faculty, who teach the majority of Basic Writing courses at many
post-secondary institutions?

We invite proposals for panels and individual presentations contributing to
the CBW workshop theme as described above. We are especially interested in
proposals that balance the ( realistic) institution- and program-specific
constraints often placed upon BW programs and classrooms with serious
attention to issues and trends across the country. Specifically, we are
interested in hearing brief (8-12 minute) presentations that describe key
issues affecting local programs, classrooms, universities, and communities,
while placing those practices and issues in the larger context.

Accepted presenters and titles will be listed on the Council of Basic
Writing program, coupled with an official letter from CBW inviting you to
present during the Council on Basic Writing conference in Atlanta, Georgia,
on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Multimedia and interactive presentations
encouraged, and CBW is especially interested in proposals from individuals
interested in building strategic coalitions with BW?including those not
currently associated with BW: writing program administrators for college
composition & advanced writing! c lasses; adult literacy educators/program
administrators; ESL/ELL writing instructors/program directors; WAC
coordinators; international student coordinators/program administrators;
adult oriented college degree program instructors/program administrators;
policy-makers and activists.

We welcome submissions from those of you who are also submitting proposals
to the regular CCCC conference in 2011. Presenting at CBW 2011 will not
interfere with your ability to present at CCCC 2011.
