CBW-L list! How can we help capture that and move it forward? (conversations

<br>
Hannah and I are working toward a proposal for the CBW Workshop that focuses on
this notion of networking and strategic coalition building, with room enough
for an afternoon drafting and voting on mission statements for CBW that might
lead (eventually) to the creation and adoption of policy statements like the
Social Justice policy. <br>
<br>
In our original proposal, Hannah and I were thinking of networking across
support services (cross campus), but perhaps it makes sense to build in
networking through regionals and other place-based, community-minded forces. <br>
<br>
Here&#8217;s a link to the conference CFP, which I don&#8217;t think is up yet but was

<br>
</span></u>Love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, objections, or concerns. <br>
<br>
Soon, Hannah and I will draft a proposal and CFP. The idea here would be to
script part of the workshop with activities like the mission statement
workshop/voting, though the CBW Inny Award won&#8217;t be a part of it since we
&nbsp;didn&#8217;t have a winner for 2010. Most of it will be drawn from conference
proposals, however. <br>
<br>
We&#8217;ll share both when we have drafts of both, and I&#8217;m checking with Eileen to
see when I&#8217;d need to get name changes to her so we can build that into the CFP
deadline. <br>

week. We are getting there. <br>

<br>
This conversation is SO exciting, and I assure you the Council of Basic Writing
Executive Board is listening. I hope you&#8217;ll keep it rolling. <br>
<br>
Seems we have a couple of exciting issues to explore together:</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<ol start=1 type=1>
 <li class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;

     airport bar (great story!). By taking over a local/regional conference

     though I&#8217;m sure we can use one of our CBW communication points to help you
     share information with one another. </span><o:p></o:p></li>
 <li class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;

</ol>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'><span style='font-size:11.0pt;
font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'><br>
The second issue may take a little longer to enact, but there does appear to be
some good energy surrounding this notion. <br>
<br>
Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;d like to suggest as early step in long-term planning for issue
#2: Propose a panel for our next CBW Workshop that will bring these
conversations together and suggest an infrastructure for these regionals that
CBW could support (Michael&#8217;s questions below are particularly helpful in this
respect). <br>
<br>
The CFP for our next CBW Workshop is in the works. That will take place the
Wednesday before CCCC 2011 in April (Atlanta). The call will be about &#8220;all our
relations&#8221; with a focus on strategic coalition building. Available soon. <br>
<br>
Review will be competitive, of course, but we are looking for proposals that
build on the field&#8217;s strengths: like these incredible ideas for networking and
coalition building. <br>
<br>
We&#8217;d love to see a panel or single presentation that shows us something about
how regionals were built into other organizations (like the International
Writing Centers Association, like TYCA, etc) and how, based on conversations with
CBW folks, we might build them here. What sort of oversight does &nbsp;the
national organization have in each case and what sort of oversight should CBW
have here? <br>
<br>
In the meantime, how can we capture this energy surrounding #1 and issues
leading to #2? <br>
<br>
Particularly useful are the questions Mike poses below. How can CBW help&#8212;to get
the word out? to share conference websites and contact lists? . . . I&#8217;m sure
there are tons of other things, as well. <br>
<br>
Thoughts? Anyone (or several of you) want to take on the task of bringing this
important energy/proposal to CBW 2011 meeting (in April 2011, Atlanta)?<br>

font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>Hello All,<br>
While other outlets, like the TYCA and Peter Adams' (et. al.) accelerated
learning conferences, are certainly useful spaces to voice and contextualize
basic writing concerns, CBW-specific regional conferences really appeal to me.
&nbsp;I like the idea of coming together with my fellow nearby CBW colleagues
to present, explore, learn, commiserate, and, perhaps, strategize about how we
might effectively persuade local policy and culture. &nbsp;If we could do so
across the nation, the CBW--and more importantly, CBW concerns--might be able
to both gain a vocal presence in our regions while, also, enriching our CCCC
discussion when we gather together in March/April. &nbsp;To effectively and
consistently address CBW concerns, I think the CBW exec board would need to 1)
identify specific regions across the country and 2) discuss whether specific
policies should be developed that would allow a regional conference to fall
under the auspices of the CBW. &nbsp;While we could certainly hold our own
regional conferences without such considerations being undertaken (and the
rebellious independent spirit in me likes the idea of designing a conference
free from the influence of a governing board), the CBW has a lot to gain
politically from a system of well organized, well promoted, and well designed
conferences. &nbsp;&nbsp;So, some questions that occur to me regarding the two
roles of the CBW in these conferences that I mention above:<br>
1) &nbsp;How big should the regions be? &nbsp;How might we insure that regions
include adequate representation from R1 schools, regional universities, liberal
arts colleges, technical and career colleges, and community colleges?<br>
2) &nbsp;How, if at all, should the CBW function as a clearing house for
regional conferences? &nbsp;What authority does the exec board have in this
matter?<br>
3) &nbsp;What support can the CBW offer to regions? &nbsp;(I imagine this
support would be largely virtual--though contact lists might be nice.)<br>
4) &nbsp;Should there be a CBW-wide goal statement for regional conferences?
&nbsp;Should there be a designation for what form that conference should take
(i.e., paper presentations, workshops, program presentations, etc.)?<br>
5) &nbsp;How should regional conferences find funding, people power, space?
&nbsp;Should there be subcommittees?<br>
6) &nbsp;Should there be a suggestion for timing of conferences? &nbsp;Should
they be annual, bi-annual, or other? &nbsp;Would it be possible to hold all
regional conferences in the same month--say, February--to both establish a
presence and to prepare members for CCCC?<br>
&nbsp;<br>
I realize those questions likely put the cart before the horse. &nbsp;What we
likely have to answer first is: &nbsp;Is there enough local interest to support
a regional conference on CBW-like themes? &nbsp;When I think of the potential
for such conferences though, I get excited. &nbsp;I am very interested in
pursuing this discussion and the idea of regional conferences further.
&nbsp;Incidentally, to answer Liz Clark's earlier email and to stake a claim I
am in the Detroit metro area. &nbsp;Given the number of different kinds of
spaces where Basic Writing is taught in this area and the number of nearby population
centers, I would love to take part in the planning a regional conference.<br>

How many people are interested in hosting a regional gathering? &nbsp;As Hannah
