Lynn Troyka, Jane Maher, Tom Peele, and Kate Garretson have all taught courses for L&L MA students recently. A few months ago, I wrote and submitted a self-study report on the L&L MA for Fall 2008/Spring 2009.
This Spring 2010 semester, I am working together with Amy Dalsimer and Wynne Ferdinand (of the La Guardia Com. College Adult & Continuing Education program) to pilot an internship for two graduate students to co-teach in GED classes in the La Guardia Community College's Adult ACE division. Since the L&L MA's mission is to prepare graduate students to teach adult education, basic writing, or college composition and literature courses, I am delighted that two of our L&L grad students (Justin March & Wynne Ferdinand) secured two full-time teaching jobs within CUNY in the past few months. In addition, two of our recent graduates (Lauren Ball and John Lyons) have just started doctoral programs (with fellowships) at NYU and at St. John's U.
This semester, I'm developing a new curriculum for a grad course titled Adult Learners of Language and Literacy. I'm also teaching an undergrad sociolinguistics class for 1st time.
For my research on adult undergraduate writers of autobiography in a prior learning assessment program, I won a Professional Staff Congress-CUNY research award for this academic year and presented part of my findings at the National Institute on the Assessment of Adult Learning in Princeton, NJ in June '09. Next month, I'll report further on this work at CCCC, where I'll also chair the SIG on Teaching Adult Learners in Diverse Contexts Friday night. We'll be focusing on issues related to teaching and learning on-line. Would love for you to attend!!
Looking forward to seeing you all very soon.
Warmly, Barbara Gleason
