CONGRATS to you and Heidi, Sugie!! Great news about the sabbatical, the publications, and (especially!) the continued legality of your wonderful marriage. Keep fighting that good fight, my friend! We'll fight it from Texas. Hopeful but not delusional. Prospects aren't good in this red state. Now. Things will change. They just have to. It's the natural order of things.

Still, today my dearest friends Kim and Neva and Christa and Rachel carry on with their families and their children and their deep love for one another, both families with enlightened employers who carry insurance for their partners and very progressive support for maternity leave and fertility plans. Kim and Neva celebrated the twins fifth birthday just last August. Christa and Rachel's girls are now 2 and 4. Life together without legal rights is bloody hard and frightening but as more and more states across the nation are forced to recognize the equality at this level . . . well, let's just say that even Texas had to eventually give up slavery way back when.

See you in SF very soon!

Hi all,
Just got back into town to find all of your postings of good news,
both personal and professional. Congrats to Peter Adams and to all of
you for the good things happening on your campuses.

Here at San Francisco State, we've had a boon year. This year, Mary
Soliday has joined our faculty, both in our Composition MA program
and as our campus WAC/WID director. We were also joined this year by
two new junior faculty members, Kory Ching from University of
Illinois and Tara Lockhart from Pitt. And we have Jennifer Trainor
who joined us last year before and is now serving as our new graduate
coordinator. As a direct result of this influx of such talented new
faculty, our graduate and undergraduate writing programs are changing
in long-overdue and positive directions, and there is a spirit of
enthusiasm and innovation in the air that's palpable. What a welcome
respite from budgetary woes! Meanwhile, our integrated reading/
writing stretch program is humming along. The next addition is
Directed Self-Placement as an alternative to California State
University's English Placement Test. Implementing DSP is my project
for the upcoming year.

On a more personal/professional note, I just came off of sabbatical.
What a genius invention sabbatical is!! How delightful to get to be
thoughtful again, and to have a single, sustained focus....what a too
rare and wonderful pleasure.... I have a new JBW article to show for
it, along with an edited book prospectus and a chapter in a newly
published volume called Generation 1.5 in College Composition.

Heidi and I continue to enjoy the right to be legally married in
California (we got married on June 25th for the third time...to each
other!!). The California Supreme Court heard arguments on Thursday to
invalidate Proposition 8, which amends the CA Constitution to define
marriage as between one man and one woman. Prop 8 passed in November
on a narrow margin of 52% to 48%. Based on the justices' questions on
Thursday, it looks like they will uphold Prop 8, but that they won't
invalidate the 18,000 marriages that took place since the supreme
court's last ruling. So for now, we are legally married and will
continue to fight for marriage equality for all....This summer, we
load up our 3 dogs into our VW camper van and head off for the wilds
of Alaksa. Can't wait....

And can't wait to see all of you in our fair city. Til next week,
safe travels to you all,
