Ah! Good point. I hadn't thought about that.

How about perspective: Donna is the Director of Graduate English Studies in
our department, which includes a PhD and MA emphasis in rhetoric and
composition. With more direct involvement with the CBW EB, perhaps we'd be
in an even better position to offer top support for graduate education in
basic writing. We already offer one course. We see the potential to offer
more extensive support by integrating basic writing scholarship throughout
the program. Lots shows up in all our comp/rhet courses already. But we'd like to be
even more strategic about it.

Tabetha will be directing our basic writing program, and she brings that
fresh perspective and the excitement we see in new faculty.

The three of us plus one other (Bill Bolin) make up our comp rhet faculty,
and we will begin an extensive reworking of our PhD program next year which
will allow us to rename/rethink graduate courses/names to better identify
what we believe the graduate program at a university like ours can do for
students training to be college-level teachers. Especially teachers of
at-risk writers.

Given all we were saying about graduate education in basic writing just a
couple of years ago, this seems like a good way to make certain this
organization has a very direct impact on the shape and function of BW in one
highly accessible grad program.

Donna and I are on the graduate faculty, of course. Tabetha will be within
months of arrival. We'll make sure the impact is very real and then made
available to the larger community in whatever way we can think to.

That's a heavy representation from one institution, but we do have some
precedent for it. Not three from any one campus, but two from at least two
campuses.

If we are uncomfortable with three, perhaps we can go with just one
additional A&M-Commerce member for now?

To be completely honest, my initial reasoning was really less strategic than
I implied above. (though I really do stand behind all I've said thus far)

Here's the thing: I mainly want some more of the A&M-Commerce folks involved
so they can get involved with the maintenance of our CBW website and future
issues of BWe. I don't know how Greg did it all those years by his lonesome.
Whew!

Thanks,
>>
>> Hi, all--
>>
>> I just wanted to put forward two more names for possible inclusion on our
>> Executive Board.
>>
>> The first is my colleague and regular collaborator Donna Dunbar-Odom. She
>> came to composition studies by way of basic writing in the field. She
>> taught basic writing and directed the writing center at a regional campus
>> in Indiana in the 1980s. She knew there had to be something more to
>> teaching basic writing than grammar drills and sentence-to-paragraph
>> exercises. So she attended CCCC and ended up at a panel on basic
>> writing/reading connections with Mariolina Salvatore, David Bartholmoe,
>> and Anthony Petrosky. She was wowed, as you can imagine.
>>
>> So she chose to enter the PhD program at Pitt to study with Barthomae and
>> Salvatore, both of whom ended up on her dissertation committee.
>>
>> As she put it when I asked if she'd be interested in throwing her hat in
>> on this, "Absolutely! I'd be honored. Them's my roots!"
>>
>> More on Donna can be found at
>> http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/litlang/dunbar-odom.asp?menuName=people&pageName
>> =faculty
>>
>> The other is our new Director of the Writing Center and the Basic Writing
>> Program (beginning Fall 2009): Tabetha Adkins. She's doing some
>> fascinating work in new media and, especially, Amish literacies (the
>> subject of her dissertation). Lots of really exciting work on ethics in
>> ethnography and fabulously interesting ways to integrate the student's
>> lived experiences into the composition classroom. At University of
>> Louisville, she studied basic writing with Bruce Horner and Min Zhan-Lu.
>> She'll have tons to add as well, especially as she takes over our basic
>> writing program here at A&M-Commerce.
>>
>> Her vita is available online at
>> http://tabethaadkins.com/main/page_curriculum_vitae.html
>>
>> What cha think? Can we add these two members to our crew? Not only are
>> they both wicked smart and committed to at-risk students. They are both SO
>> much fun!
>>
>> Thanks!
