Subject: Update on Basic Writing Database

Hello everyone,

Deborah and I spoke this week about the BW database project (I did a Reply
All to Karen's March email, so that we would have easy access to our earlier
conversations and to the PDF of the draft of the Survey, which you'll find
if you scroll down). At the CBW workshop, we agreed that we would get back
to this project in June and aim to have the Survey available online in
September.

Deborah has drafted a Welcome statement, which we all felt we needed. The
draft is attached for your comments and suggestions. Greg, do you feel we
should do our responses on Googledocs? Please suggest the most efficient way
for us to respond.

We also need to figure out a process for fine tuning the survey. We welcome
your suggestions on that.

Finally, we're hoping that Shannon or Deborah could forward these materials
to all members of the CBW Board for their responses.

We hope your summer is off to a good start!
> Hi, all--
> I'm forwarding a message from Glenn Blalock which contains a printable
> CBW survey in PDF form, updates on the online survey, and answers to my
> questions. Hope this gets us set for the workshop.
> I will bring 60 cc. of my "answers" to sample questions... Do I need to
> bring hard copies of the survey? I don't think we need more than one set
> Karen,
>
> I'm finally getting around to replying to your post from earlier this week.
>
> First, though, two updates:
>
> 1--I have activated the "update" feature for the survey so that authors can
> return to the survey and revise, add, change, etc. You'll see the link on
> the list of respondents. However, before we launch the full survey, we'll
> need to explore if it might be necessary to protect profiles or limit access
> to updates.
>
> 2--I'm attaching a PDF of the survey that you might print and use; it's
> four pages, because it is a replica of the online version.
>
> Now to some of your comments:
>
> Some questions:
>> I noticed this morning that the questions apparently take unlimited but
>> unformatted text--is that right? I had copied in a box that became text.
>> I think this is something we should inform people of who fill out the
>> survey.
>
>
> I need to explore what's possible in terms of formatting the text entries.
> As you discovered, anything typed into or pasted into the boxes will be
> displayed as plain text, with no paragraphing, etc. You could use simple
> html code for formatting, such as <p> for paragraphs and <b> for bold, etc.
> But I may find a more transparent solution.
>
>
>
>>
>> I assume that respondents can stop and start the survey at will--and can
>> they check their responses before final submission? I used an "autofill"
>> tool to begin mine, and didn't realize (until I read over my partial
>> survey) that I had put my last name where my email address should have
>> gone.
>
>
> The "update" feature that is now active will allow folks to start, stop,
> return, etc.
>
>
>>
>> How long did it take you to complete the survey? I was thinking if I was
>> to do a thorough job on this, it could take a while, and therefore I
>> might tend to put it off. So we might encourage quick responses to begin
>> with the option of coming back later with more refined responses--survey
>> to be revisable?
>
>
> The length of these things is always an issue, but with the ability to
> return and complete / revise, I think the instructions / explanations can
> offer users a number of options.
>
>>
>> As to searching, the others did not mention it. I personally think it
>> would be useful to be able to quickly collect all the responses to a
>> single item--for instance, all the responses regarding placement. Also a
>> global "Google" type search would be great.
>
>
> I have a search tool now available; when I clean up the interface, I'll
> show you.
>
> I'll look forward to hearing how the workshop goes.
>
> I hope you and your husband are doing well.
>
> gb
>
>
>
>>
>> Again, thanks for this gift!
>>
>> Karen Uehling
>>
>> *****
>>
>> Thanks to all of you! The survey looks great. And I agree that we
>> should wait until after the conference to write the welcome and
>> explanation sections.
>>
>> Susan
>>
>>
>> Yes, I agree, the survey looks great. It might be a good idea to wait
>> until after the conference anyway to write the "welcome" and
>> "explanation" sections, since we may see what needs clarification from
>> the response at the workshop. Thanks again, Karen and Glenn!
>>
>> Hello everyone,
>>
>> Like Karen and Greg, I found the survey to be nicely laid out and very
>> easy to use--a satisfying online experience. One of the best things to
>> come out of this survey may be the conversations among colleagues in the
>> same program as they attempt to answer these questions. I certainly
>> would have to talk with other people in my institution to answer all of
>> these questions.
>>
>> Do you think we can wait until after CCCC to write the "Welcome" and
>> "Explanation" sections?
>>
>> All the best,
