Hi Everyone,

I've surfaced (literally). It was an amazing (if unexpectedly CHOPPY)
week under the water. My group planted 300 staghorn coral starts on
Pickles Reef outside of Tavernier Florida. It's part of the Coral Reef
Conservation Project & it was a pretty amazing experience. I could have
done without the 2-3 foot seas to get back on the boat, though. Ouch.

With T-1 week to go, this is looking great. I've read through all of
your e-mails from the week and it looks like we're in great shape.

In short, wow! You are amazing!

Huzzah to Bill! How awesome is it that Victor will join us? Amazing!

Wendy & Steve are making great headway on the roundtable.

With respect to the publishing panel: I would like to split the
difference: maybe there's a way we can do a publishing workshop for
those who are interested and a networking time for those who aren't.
What would you think about two options? I do like Cheryl's proposal of
different tables for the publishing piece. I'd also like to add a table
for grant writing.

Tomorrow or Wednesday, I'll send around a formal write up for the
workshop for your perusal.

Thanks so much everyone!

Liz

Lynn Reid’s suggestion of offering a publishing/grant writing workshop
similar to the Graduate Research Network at the Computers and Writing
Conference sounds really wonderful. Based on that model here’s what we
might propose for maximum involvement for our participants and for
members
of the executive board. And definitely think of the list below as
suggestions to completely revise, tweak, or disregard as necessary.

1) Before the conference, interested participants submit a brief
abstract
of something they are working on or trying to work on to the EB (or an
EB
subcommittee charged with this task).

2) People who submit are automatically invited to take part in the
workshop and their name would in the CBW program so they can ask for
funding from their home institutions. People who do not submit ALSO can
take part; see #5 below. The workshop would NOT be limited to graduate
students.

3) During the workshop, the group is broken into tables with 1-2 table
mentors, people who have published, researched, and/or won grants in
particular areas. The EB has so many qualified people that this part of
the process should be easy.

4) Additionally we can invite people outside CBW to serve as mentors.
Or
we could use horizontal organization and have people at tables discuss
their projects and offer suggestions to each other*whatever format seems
most feasible to the EB.

5) Participants choose tables based on their particular interests. Or
participants can be assigned to tables based on the abstracts they
submitted. Participants who did not submit can choose among these
tables,
and/or we can create a table for people who don't know where to start.

6) Participants share a bit about their projects and then the mentors
lead a discussion on how to: frame the research, shape the research for
publication, consider IRBs, identify potential grant funders and so on.

7) This process would help to welcome new folks to CBW and would be a
terrific draw, IMHO.

Best,

Susan
