[CBW_Exec] CBW 2013--Important to READ and REPLY ALL! REPLY ALL! REPLY ALL!

Perhaps there could be a bridge, as Deborah suggests, along the lines of what Sarah says here: "They/we do need to work on gathering already published research as well as conducting our own research in order to write necessary reports and proposals to our dean and upper admin."

I don't know if we're hoping to have a roundtable of some sort and then breakout groups or just go straight to smaller group work. But either way, we could work in tables divided by interest, which may include: grant writing; publishing, with tables dedicated to different topics/interests (e.g. qualitative research, co- or group-authored projects, quantitative research, IRB, classroom or program admin "narratives," research focused on student writing, developing text books, and so on depending on the interests of applicants); "breaking into" BW research (for grad students and others new to the fiend); and accessing/using existing scholarship for program development (reports to administration, proposals, faculty development, etc).

I think we could announce this part of the workshop as "developing and using BW research and scholarship for grant writers, authors, administrators, and teachers," or something like that. We could invite those who wish to have their work-in-progress discussed to submit drafts or write-ups of their projects. But we could invite those without specific projects to indicate how they use, and would like to discuss, BW research/scholarship.

While I understand Robert's interest in supporting scholarly pursuits in BW, I also hear Sarah's concern about excluding folks who are planning to attend the workshop. What if the emphasis on publishing/grant writing included an element focusing on how scholarly work in BW (and beyond) applies directly to instruction and vice versa? In other words, how might we bridge these two worlds? Such a bridge seems especially important given the theoretical and political underpinnings of BW.

Sarah,

I have to write in support of #7 if only because I feel we need more publishing in BW. Perhaps, we could get a rep from CCC, JBW, and other BW friendly journals to be there.

Hello to All.

I have a concern about BW inclusion/exclusion with our focus in the afternoon on a Publishing/Grant writing workshop. I've been encouraging my peeps at our tech and community college to "finally" join me and come to a 4Cs next year. However, not a single one of our faculty nor adjuncts focus on grant writing or publishing (beyond a few who write novels and poetry). They/we do need to work on gathering already published research as well as conducting our own research in order to write necessary reports and proposals to our dean and upper admin.

Is there a way we could broaden this workshop to include something for the many BW folk who do not publish or write grants?

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi everyone,

I especially agree with #7 on Susan's list about welcoming newcomers to CBW. At my first CBW, I felt a little bit like an outsider who was joining a conversation that had been going on for a long time. I think that everyone really and truly tries to be welcoming at CBW, but it's uncomfortable to enter a group where everyone seems to know everyone already (or at least it was for me and a few other people I've spoken to over the past few years).

The thing that I LOVED about my first experience at Computers and Writing was that the GRN made me feel instantly like I was being welcomed to the group and that folks were interested in my ideas and perspectives. And I left with some really concrete ideas about how to/why to reframe some of the work I was doing.

I also agree that the workshop should not be limited to grad students. I think it's worth mentioning, though, that most grad students interested in BW (myself included) are probably working in doctoral programs that don't have a BW expert, so this kind of workshop would be especially valuable for those of us in that position. A special plug for grad students might be a good way to draw new people in.

Lynn Reid's suggestion of offering a publishing/grant writing workshop similar to the Graduate Research Network at the Computers and Writing Conference sounds really wonderful. Based on that model here's what we might propose for maximum involvement for our participants and for members of the executive board. And definitely think of the list below as suggestions to completely revise, tweak, or disregard as necessary.

1) Before the conference, interested participants submit a brief abstract of something they are working on or trying to work on to the EB (or an EB subcommittee charged with this task).

2) People who submit are automatically invited to take part in the workshop and their name would in the CBW program so they can ask for funding from their home institutions. People who do not submit ALSO can take part; see #5 below. The workshop would NOT be limited to graduate students.

3) During the workshop, the group is broken into tables with 1-2 table mentors, people who have published, researched, and/or won grants in particular areas. The EB has so many qualified people that this part of the process should be easy.

4) Additionally we can invite people outside CBW to serve as mentors. Or we could use horizontal organization and have people at tables discuss their projects and offer suggestions to each other-whatever format seems most feasible to the EB.

5) Participants choose tables based on their particular interests. Or participants can be assigned to tables based on the abstracts they submitted. Participants who did not submit can choose among these tables, and/or we can create a table for people who don't know where to start.

6) Participants share a bit about their projects and then the mentors lead a discussion on how to: frame the research, shape the research for publication, consider IRBs, identify potential grant funders and so on.

7) This process would help to welcome new folks to CBW and would be a terrific draw, IMHO.
Best,
Susan

i All,

I'm getting ready to leave (in an hour!) and will be off-line for all of next week. If there's easy access to the Internet, I may check in mid-week, but I'm not going to promise if for now, since I'm not sure what I'm walking into. I'm back on 5/1, which will give us another week to nail down the details.

Thanks in advance to everyone for all of your fabulous ideas and comments.

Here's where we are right now:

Basic Writing and Race: A Symposium

Morning:

1. Keynote--hopefully Victor Villanueva (Bill, let us know how that comes along)
2. Poster session featuring new scholars (call to come out later).
3. Networking

Afternoon:

4. Roundtable on Basic Writing and Whiteness)

5. Publishing/Grant writing workshop.

6. Reception again (if they're game?)

I was originally going to invite editors to do the publishing workshop, but I love Lynn's idea of making it a workshop. We could have groups according to where people are at with publishing, ranging from ideas to manuscript critiques.

What do you think?

Hi everyone,
First, thanks to all for the welcoming words. I'm looking forward to
working with each of you.

As for CBW 2013, I also support Liz's idea of the publishing and grant
writing workshop. The Computers and Writing Conference offers a similar
session as part of the Graduate Research Network, and it's by far the most
valuable part of my conference experience there every year. I wonder if we
could model their approach and ask folks to bring ideas or research in
progress for a mentoring session on publishing.

Everything else sounds fantastic for next year!
Best,
Lynn
