Thanks, everyone, for the opportunity to join the Executive Board. I'm looking forward to our collaborative work and to the 2013 CBW / CCCC.
I too vote for a clear emphasis on race issues, and I like the idea of incorporating issues related to race in a poster session and/or breakout small group discussions. I also welcome the idea of incorporating writing center work into the CBW preconference. I'm halfway through Writing Centers and the New Racism and am finding it to be one of most thought-provoking and important books I've read in the last several years. And, as some of you already know, I'm deeply interested in improving the ways writing centers and writing tutors engage and interact with basic writers.
I'd support any and all of the suggested keynote speakers, and I agree with Steve's point re: Scott Lyons' involvement in the workshop. Scott is a passionate advocate for student writers and a superb speaker on the topic of sovereignty - rhetorical and otherwise.

Hello everyone,
Welcome to new executive board members, many thanks to Hannah for her leadership over the past two years, and thanks and congratulations to Sugie, who will be a wonderful co-chair with Liz, who has done such a great job so far. Also, Laura, welcome back to you. It's great to hear that you'll be able to attend the CBW workshop next year. Unfortunately, I won't be there since CCCC 2013 conflicts with the CUNY Pipeline Program's annual conference. As sad as I will be to miss CCCC next year, I'm very pleased as plans for the CBW workshop evolve. These are such important issues and really the major focus of my new post-retirement job as faculty consultant for the Pipeline Program. The goal of this program, which has actually been in existence since 1991, is to increase diversity in the professoriate with a substantial mentoring program for academically strong and motivated students from underrepresented groups who are interested in careers in college teaching and research. I'm reminded of the continuing need for such programs every time I attend a national conference like CCCC. So I really hope we can attract a more diverse group of participants and poster presenters for the 2013 CBW workshop.
All the suggestions as to possible people to reach out to seem excellent. I think Ian Marshall would probably be pleased to be invited and would just point out that his recent book is co-authored with Wendy Ryden of LIU in Long Island, who is also on the JBW editorial review board. I imagine she would appreciate the invitation as well.
Warm regards to all,
Rebecca

Hi Everyone,
First and foremost, I want to join Steve in offering a big ol' thank-you to Hannah. Those are big shoes to fill, but I'm delighted to be on board as Co-chair with Liz. I also join you all in sending a hearty welcome to our new members, Cheryl, Mike, Bob, Michelle and Lynn. I look forward to our work ahead.
I second Bill's observation that Hannah and Steve are providing us with good food for thought as we contemplate next year's CBW workshop and I am in support of Bill's hybird plan (having had a similar reaction to both Hannah and Steve). So, I'd advocate for a theme that foregrounds race, with some of Steve's possibilities moving their way into the poster presentations.
Malea Powell or Victor would be great as keynotes. In addition to Steve and Wendy's important work, I wish we could also get Ian Marshall involved. His Reading, Writing and the Rhetorics of Whiteness is an impressive work (check out the chapter, Whiteness (as) in Basic Writing).

Hi Everyone,
Hope this finds you all well! First, we have an administrative issue: our new executive committee members aren't yet on the EXEC BOARD mailing list, so I've added them manually here. Would you please make sure that you hit "REPLY ALL" when you respond to this so that they are included in the conversation? Please "REPLY ALL!" Thank you!
I'm writing with a welcome, exciting news, and questions about CBW 2013.
So, first up: I'm DELIGHTED to announce that our friend and colleague Sugie Goen-Salter will be joining me as co-chair of CBW (Liz: 2011-2014, Sugie: 2012-2015). Yay! I know that she will do a wonderful job and I'm excited to work with her, and all of you.
Let's also offer a warm work of welcome to Cheryl, Mike, Bob, Michelle, and Lynn! We're so excited that you are joining us!
Now, down to business. From your responses last week, I think that people are inclined to go with a program that combines the following two threads:
1. A focus on basic writing & political issues (access, cutting back on
programs, etc.) AND 2. A focus on basic writing in HBCU and HSIs?
A. Hannah has suggested that we approach Malea Powell for the keynote. What do you think about that? And, do you have additional ideas for a keynote?
B. Steve--I know that you have ideas about this program/focus. Do you want to share some of those with the group? How might you and Wende fold into this program? Do you want to?
Based on your feedback, we're thinking about 1 keynote. I think that leaves the afternoon open. Do we want to do 2 sets of poster presentations? Additional ideas?
I'm thinking that we would do a similar flow to this year:
1. Opening keynote (on theme)
2. Networking
3. Poster presentations
4. Something in place of the afternoon keynote (what?)
5. Maybe (?) a second round of poster presentations (?) OR a session
on publishing & grant writing
What do you think?
Also, please note, I will be off-line next week, 4/21-5/1 because I'm going diving in the the Keys doing a coral reef restoration project. We will make our deadline with no problem, but if you could respond sooner rather than later, that would be great! :-)
Liz
