All:
I'm also certainly in favor of a combination of 1 and 2--leaning toward 2 as the primary focus for next year. In this sense, I echo much of what both Susan and Bill have said...

Liz, thanks for starting this conversation. My own priority for the themes would be #2. Though I think there are links between #1 and #2, I'd like to see HBCUs, HSIs, tribal colleges, and other institutions serving historically underserved or underresourced students highlighted. (Doing so would naturally bring in the issue of politics, access, and budget cuts, as well as wrongheaded placement and assessment schemes.)
The reasons I want to focus on HBCUs and their HSI and tribal counterparts are:
a. CBW has been working to make our membership reflect our student constituency for some time: not to get essentialist about it, but we're still way too white to claim that all voices are being heard. Let's invite a broader conversation.
b. Transcultural and translingual inclusion is becoming a key ingredient in composition generally; this follows on the rhetorical principles articulated by Freire, Macrorie, Villanueva, Delpit and others that inclusive engagement with multiple cultural voices is necessary if discourses (including academic discourses) are to have creative and social power. HBCUs, HSIs, and tribal colleges are nodes of transcultural and translingual inclusion.
Next step: finding a keynoter, and connecting with our audience for the workshop with this emphasis (if the Exec agrees that this is the way to go, of course). The Council on WPA has both regional chapters and "theme" chapters (I've heard of a small-college WPA chapter, and a Jesuit-colleges WPA chapter); is there, say, an HBCU WPA chapter?
On the structure that Liz described: my own two cents is that the poster sessions and subsession setup was highly successful both in getting some new folks involved in the workshop, and in diversifying the number of BW program issues introduced to serve the attendees. It was a great idea--thanks!--and let's do it again, I'd say.
Okay...that's enough from me for now. Good to talk with you all...
Collegially,
Bill

Hi Folks,
Starting work on CBW 2013. What is more interesting to you right now?
1. A focus on basic writing & political issues (access, cutting back on
programs, etc.)
2. A focus on basic writing in HBCU and HSIs?
3. A focus on basic writing & technology
4. Something else?
I'm thinking that we would do a similar flow to this year:
1. Opening keynote (on theme)
2. Networking
3. Poster presentations
4. Afternoon keynote (on theme)
5. Maybe (?) a second round of poster presentations (?) OR a session
on publishing & grant writing
What do you think?
Liz
