I agree with all that everyone else has said, and I'm delighted to see the direction this has taken. I don't have any suggestions for wording as per Deborah's suggestion regarding privatization of education, but I agree with Sugie that we should include something influencing public policy. Seems important to include as our stated goals, even if it is too little too late.
I don't know if this gets at anything regarding the privitization, but I do want to see something about access. What about this?

Subject: [CBW_Exec] Other thoughts from the EB on CBW Mission Statement?
Hi all:
Are there any other comments, questions, or concerns regarding our version of a CBW mission statement?
So far, we've heard from Deborah Mutnick in terms of content suggestions (see below for pasted version of her original message), and Alan Meyers in terms of editorial suggestions.
I've re-attached the original version of this statement in several formats to this e-mail--though I'm certainly amenable to all the suggested changes that I've heard so far.
Any last thoughts on this issue would be most appreciated.

Hi Steve,
Thanks to you and the subcommittee for revising the mission statement. Overall, it looks great. I have one concrete suggestion and two questions. The suggestion is to add "class" to the list of forms of diversity so it would read: "...especially in terms of language, race, ethnicity, class, background, and ability."
The questions are 1) Although CBW has not been formally engaged in any K-12 (especially 6-12) dialogues, is it something that we want to promote? The current discussions about common core standards, etc., seem to offer an opportunity for us to engage more visibly and effectively with secondary school teachers.
2) In the last bullet point on influencing public policies, I wonder if we also want to say something about private foundations and corporate influence on education. Given the privatization of education, the intent to influence "public policies" almost, alas, seems too little, too late.
Thanks again for pushing us forward.
Deborah
